In Rationalizing Capitalist Democracy, S. M. Amadae tells the remarkable story of how rational choice theory rose from obscurity to become the intellectual bulwark of capitalist democracy. Amadae roots Rationalizing Capitalist Democracy in the turbulent post-World War II era, showing how rational choice theory grew out of the RAND Corporation's efforts to develop a "science" of military and policy decisionmaking. But while the first generation of rational choice theorists—William Riker, Kenneth Arrow, and James Buchanan—were committed to constructing a "scientific" approach to social science research, they were also deeply committed to defending American democracy from its Marxist critics. Amadae reveals not only how the ideological battles of the Cold War shaped their ideas but also how those ideas may today be undermining the very notion of individual liberty they were created to defend.

Dollars Or Democracy written by Yorick Blumenfeld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-01 with Political Science categories.

A WAKE-UP CALL TO ALL AMERICANS ! "Capitalism, as a socio-economic system, is threatening both our human and spiritual survival and yet we remain in denial," warns the author." Like anorexics, we look in the mirror but refuse to recognize what we are doing to ourselves and our planet. Spiritually capitalism is a totally amoral system but our purportedly Christian nation raises no concerted protest against its incredibly corrupting effect on ourselves and children." Capitalism, he maintains, does not concern itself with morality: it is focused on profits. Blumenfeld devotes the first half of his book to examine why capitalism and democracy are basically incompatible. The litany of capitalism's devastating effects are becoming well known, although his condemnation of the corrupting impact of money on the democratic process is chilling. In the second half the author contends that there is an alternative, that if we want to prolong our existence on this planet we must turn to a less-abrasive and truly democratic system based on cooperation rather than one predicated on greed and competition. "Yorick Blumenfeld should be invited to every TV chat show on the planet. He could teach the world to sing...He says we should try to enhance the charms of life in the 21st Century with 'joy and laughter and a good measure of civility.' Clear the TV schedules now. Make lots of room for Yorick Blumenfeld." Michael Thompson-Noel, The Financial Times. "We are not the captives of capitalism. We do have a democratic choice. We have it within our power to change the economy to suit our needs without resorting to violence or coercion. But this demands careful thinking, vigorous discussion and debate, followed by planning and decision making. This book offers you choices, not destiny." From the conclusion of Dollars or Democracy. . . . Dollars or Democracy? Ground-Breaking Book Presents a Rational Alternative to Capitalism Cambridge, UK (Release Date October 8, 2004) "Wake up, America! There is an alternative to capitalism." In this powerful new book, Dollars or Democracy, author Yorick Blumenfeld presents a rational, well-documented case why capitalism is no longer compatible with democracy, why we are headed towards a dollar crisis, and then goes on to present in considerable detail a technology-driven and democratic alternative. "Capitalism, as a socio-economic system, is threatening both our human and spiritual survival and yet we remain in denial," warns the author. "Like anorexics, we look in the mirror but are unable to recognize what we are doing to ourselves and our planet. Spiritually, capitalism is an avowedly amoral system but our purportedly Christian nation raises no concerted protest against its incredibly corrupting effects on ourselves and on our children." Capitalism, he maintains, does not concern itself with morality: its focus is on the bottom line. The book takes a penetrating look at the economic mess we are in from a refreshingly non-Marxist perspective. It mercilessly attacks the current economic shibboleths that "the market," if given a free hand, could resolve all our economic problems. It blasts Milton Freedman and all the neo-liberals of the "Chicago School of Economics" as perverting the course of economics by portraying private corporations as universally more desirable than state run utilities. The author describes the workings of what he calls the "credit system" in detail. Smart cards will end our need for cash altogether and replace it with electronic credits. He argues cogently that we produce more than enough to feed and clothe everyone on this planet only capitalism's monetary strictures deny the universal distribution of this abundance. His system ultimately is predicated

Capitalist Democracy On Trial written by Dennis Smith and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-15 with Political Science categories.

First published in 1990, Capitalist Democracy on Trial explores the long transatlantic debate on capitalist democracy. It examines the conflicting verdicts of writers and politicians in the USA and Europe. The first section focuses on democracy and the rise of big business. It discusses the views of Tocqueville, Mill, Carnegie, Chamberlain, Bryce, Ostrogorski, Veblen and Hobson. The second section covers capitalism and the rise of ‘big government’. The writers represented are Laski, Lasswell, Hayek, Schumpeter, Galbraith, Friedman, Miliband, Brittan, Piven, and Cloward. Using a historical and comparative framework Dennis Smith argues that the transatlantic debate on capitalist democracy has passed through three phases. By World War I the early nineteenth century ideology of ‘participation’ had been replaced by a conception of capitalist democracy as ‘manipulation’. Between the wars this was superseded by an ideology of ‘regulation’. Then the drift has been towards the need for ‘conservation’. His systematic approach demonstrate the dynamics of an unfolding debate and combines theoretical insight with clarity of exposition. This book will be an invaluable text for students of political science, sociology, social theory, and the history of political economy.

In Liberalism Disavowed, Chua Beng Huat examines the rejection of Western-style liberalism in Singapore and the way the People's Action Party has forged an independent non-Western ideology. This book explains the evolution of this communitarian ideology, with focus on three areas: public housing, multiracialism and state capitalism, each of which poses different challenges to liberal approaches. With the passing of the first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew and the end of the Cold War, the party is facing greater challenges from an educated populace that demands greater voice. This has led to liberalization of the cultural sphere, greater responsiveness and shifts in political rhetoric, but all without disrupting the continuing hegemony of the PAP in government.

Capitalism V Democracy written by Timothy K. Kuhner and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-25 with Law categories.

As of the latest national elections, it costs approximately $1 billion to become president, $10 million to become a Senator, and $1 million to become a Member of the House. High-priced campaigns, an elite class of donors and spenders, superPACs, and increasing corporate political power have become the new normal in American politics. In Capitalism v. Democracy, Timothy Kuhner explains how these conditions have corrupted American democracy, turning it into a system of rule that favors the wealthy and marginalizes ordinary citizens. Kuhner maintains that these conditions have corrupted capitalism as well, routing economic competition through political channels and allowing politically powerful companies to evade market forces. The Supreme Court has brought about both forms of corruption by striking down campaign finance reforms that limited the role of money in politics. Exposing the extreme economic worldview that pollutes constitutional interpretation, Kuhner shows how the Court became the architect of American plutocracy. Capitalism v. Democracy offers the key to understanding why corporations are now citizens, money is political speech, limits on corporate spending are a form of censorship, democracy is a free market, and political equality and democratic integrity are unconstitutional constraints on money in politics. Supreme Court opinions have dictated these conditions in the name of the Constitution, as though the Constitution itself required the privatization of democracy. Kuhner explores the reasons behind these opinions, reveals that they form a blueprint for free market democracy, and demonstrates that this design corrupts both politics and markets. He argues that nothing short of a constitutional amendment can set the necessary boundaries between capitalism and democracy.
