Ennen vuotta 1989 itäisen Uudenmaan ja Kymenlaakson rannikolta ei tunnettu montaakaan rautakautista asuinpaikkaa tai hautaa ja irtolöydötkin oli laskettavissa yhden käden sormin. Löydöttömyyden perusteella aluetta ei ole luettu kuuluvaksi rannikon maanviljelysalueisiin. 1990-luvun lopulla tutkittiin ensimmäiset roomalaisajan röykkiöhaudat Pyhtään Strukan kalmistossa. Sittemmin itäisen Uudenmaan ja Kymijokilaakson rautakautisten ja keskiaikaisten löytöjen määrä on lisääntynyt vuosi vuodelta. Kahden henkilön Rautakymi- työryhmä päätti vuonna 2010 tutkia tulevan Koskenkylä-Kotka valtatien linjan uudelleen, vaikka tielinjalle oli tehty virallinen arkeologinen inventointi jo vuonna 2005. Päätös oli kohtalokas, sillä tielinjalta löytyi kaksi laajaa arkeologista kohdetta. Loviisan Tesjoella sijaitseva Viirankoski osoittautui moniperiodiseksi asuinpaikaksi, kun taas Kymijoen suulta Ahvenkosken Haasianiemestä löytynyt satama oli käytössä keskiajalla. Noin kolmannes kummastakin kohteesta tuhoutui syksyllä 2014 valmistuneen valtatien alle. Rautakymi työryhmä inventoi Porvoon Ilolan ja Pyhtään Huutjärven välisiä jokilaaksoja kahdeksan vuoden ajan. Runsaasti kuvitettu tietokirja luo katsauksen alueen tutkimushistoriaan, ryhmän kokoamaan arkeologiseen aineistoon, uusiin muinaisjäännöksiin, sekä materiaalitutkimusten tuloksiin.

The chapters of Fibula, Fabula, Fact – The Viking Age in Finland are intended to provide essential foundations for approaching the important topic of the Viking Age in Finland. These chapters are oriented to provide introductions to the sources, methods and perspectives of diverse disciplines in a way that is accessible to specialists from other fields, specialists from outside Finland, and also to non-specialist readers and students who may be more generally interested in the topic. Rather than detailed case studies, the contributors have sought to negotiate definitions of the Viking Age as a historical period in the cultural areas associated with modern-day Finland, and in areas associated with Finns, Karelians and other North Finnic linguistic-cultural groups more generally. Within the incredible diversity of data and disciplines represented here, the Viking Age tends to be distinguished by differentiating it from earlier and later periods, while the geographical space is quite fluidly defined for this era, which was long before the construction of modern nations with their fenced and guarded borders. Most significantly, the contributions lay emphasis on contextualizing the Viking Age within the complexities of defining cultural identities in the past through traces of cultural, linguistic or genetic features. The volume opens with a general introduction to the topic that is intended to provide a frame of reference for discussion, paralleled by a closing afterward. The following chapters are organized according to three thematic sections which reflect the three aspects of any discussion of the Viking Age in Finland: Time, Space, and People – because any discussion of the ‘Viking Age’ in ‘Finland’ is necessarily concerned with individuals, societies and cultures.

Vanhan sanonnan mukaan seppä on taitava henkilö niin aineen kuin hengenkin alalla. Kirja luo katsauksen sepänalan esihistoriaan sekä tarinoihin kotimaamme sepistä, joita on onnekkaasti säil- ynyt jälkipolville. Muistitiedon mukaan seppien joukkoon mahtui monenlaisia persoonallisuuksia ja osa heistä toimi pajatyön ohella monenlaisissa muissakin tehtävissä, kuten kylänvanhimpina, poliitikkoina, parantajina, verenlaskijoina, tai -seisauttajina, näkijöinä, noitina, hautausurakoitsi- joina, soitinrakentajina, puoskareina ja jopa kätilöinä. Osa sepistä harrasti aktiivisesti musiikkia rakentaen itse harmonnit, mandoliinit, kitarat, viulut ja kanteleet, esiintyen monenmoisissa kokoonpanoissa yli pitäjärajojen. Jotkut sepät saivan nimeä synnynnäisinä jutunkertojina, joiden kaskut ovat periytyneet tähän päivään asti. Huumoripitoiset seppäjutut toivat vaihtelua pajan rankkaan arkipäivään. Seppien joukkoon mahtui myös originelleja, jotka halveksivat avoimesti virkavaltaa, pappeja, rikasta säätyä. Yhteisön arvomaailman ja normien halveksiminen tuli esille mitä moninaisimimp- ien tempausten muodossa. Elämää väritti ennen vanhaan taikausko, noituus ja magia ja sepillä oli niiden harjoittamisessa oma tärkeä roolinsa, ensisijaisesti pajaelinkeinon edistäjänä, joka lienee vanhaa perua rautakaudelta. Taikuuden harjoittaminen pajassa pönkitti sepän asemaa kyläy- hteisössä ja samalla se ylläpiti ammoisista ajoista asti periytynyttä sankarimyyttiä. Sepät eivät paljastaneet salaisuuksiaan muille ja se sai ihmiset äärimmäisen uteliaiksi. Kun kyläläiset eivät ymmärtäneet sepän käyttämien prosessien kulkua ja kun seppä tuntui alati kes- kustelevan ahjon, alasimen tai palkeiden kanssa, alkoivat ihmiset uskoa, että sepällä täytyi olla luontaisia kykyjä hallita yliluonnollisia voimia.

This volume examines workshop waste and discusses the craftspeople in the Viking town of Kaupang including their activities, crafted products, raw materials, skills and networks. The study focuses on artefacts used in non-ferrous metalworking: crucibles, moulds, matrix dies, tuyeres and a unique collection of lead models.The tools and the waste material provide a completely new understanding of the craftspeople who were working with gold, silver, copper alloys, lead and tin. These metalworkers mastered many different materials and techniques; indeed, they were well-informed, well-trained and skillful, and manufactured a range of different items for women and men. There is every reason to believe that visitors and residents perceived the non-ferrous metalworking as a defining feature of the Viking-period town. The combination of excavations and surface surveys has produced a broad and diverse collection of material very similar to finds in different Viking-period towns in Scandinavia including Ribe, Birka and Hedeby. The finds show that Kaupang was an important centre for the production of jewelry, and the craftsmen appear to have had access to a range of high quality raw materials including brass and kaolin clay. Their activity can be traced from the earliest layers of the beginning of the 9th Century to the early 10th Century. Altogether, the production waste from Kaupang illustrates how a range of different social groups were involved in the process of forging an urban identity.

This book analyses the society, economy, settlement, and culture of the territory of present-day Estonia in the period of ca AD 450-1050. This period is known in the Estonian archaeological chronology as the Migration Period, the Pre-Viking Age, and the Viking Age. This was an era of rapid change, by the end of which traditional Estonian peasant culture as it is known until the 19th century had developed. Whereas in Western Europe written sources from the second half of the first millennium AD herald the arrival of the Middle Ages, there is an almost complete absence of written information about the prevailing conditions and events that took place in the area of present-day Estonia. There are only remains of the farms and fortresses of that time beneath the earth, as well as cemeteries, overgrown field baulks and clearance cairns, and the large amount of excavated ancient objects or fragments thereof. Many aspects of prehistoric life cannot be researched because the source material is not extant and there is no hope of finding it. Moreover, many phenomena of human life do not generate archaeological source material. Thus our overall understanding of the Estonian Middle Iron Age and the Viking Age is inevitably fragmentary and superficial.
