¿Cómo nació la idea de socialismo? No fue una iluminación momentánea ni el producto inspirado de un solo pensador, sino un lento proceso que involucró a dos o tres generaciones de luchadores, filósofos, reformadores y militantes, que culminaron en la síntesis elaborada por Marx y Engels en las vísperas de la revolución de 1848. Este libro intenta dar cuenta de cómo ese conjunto de nociones nacieron como una crítica del régimen instaurado con la Revolución Francesa, en la pluma de Saint-Simon y sus discípulos. A ello le siguieron los intentos por llevar a la práctica los principios de la asociación de trabajadores, sin cuestionar las bases de la sociedad y confiando en que el Estado tendría un papel favorable o neutro frente a esos ensayos. Se analiza también la creación de un movimiento político feminista en el seno de ese incipiente socialismo, así como los primeros intentos por desarrollar una historia y una sociología compatibles con la nueva mirada sobre la sociedad. La historia se completa con las luchas de las sociedades secretas y el nacimiento de la idea de comunismo, y desemboca en la síntesis elaborada por Marx y Engels, que se refleja en las múltiples herencias observables en su obra y, particularmente, en el Manifiesto comunista. Hernán M. Díaz se interna en el complejo mundo del socialismo anterior a Marx para concluir que el marxismo no fue sino el resultado de una serie de tanteos teóricos previos, que se enfrentaron a la realidad política de su época y se fueron modificando a partir tanto de la práctica política como de las transformaciones que el mismo sistema capitalista iba experimentando.

Joseph de Maistre's Considerations on France is the best known French equivalent of Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. This new edition of Richard Lebrun's 1974 translation is introduced by Isaiah Berlin, with a bibliography and chronology by the translator. Published in 1797, the work of the self-exiled Maistre presents a providential interpretation of the French Revolution and argues for a new alliance of throne and altar under a restored Bourbon monarchy. Although the Directory and then Napoleon delayed Maistre's influence within France until the Restoration, he is now acknowledged as the most eloquent spokesperson for continental conservatism. Considerations on France was a shrewd piece of propaganda, but, as Isaiah Berlin contends, by arguing his case in broad historical, philosophical and religious terms, Maistre raises issues of enduring importance.

This book is an extended argument on the "coloniality" of power by one of the most innovative scholars of Latin American studies. In a shrinking world where sharp dichotomies, such as East/West and developing/developed, blur and shift, Walter Mignolo points to the inadequacy of current practice in the social sciences and area studies. He introduces the crucial notion of "colonial difference" into study of the modern colonial world. He also traces the emergence of new forms of knowledge, which he calls "border thinking." Further, he expands the horizons of those debates already under way in postcolonial studies of Asia and Africa by dwelling in the genealogy of thoughts of South/Central America, the Caribbean, and Latino/as in the United States. His concept of "border gnosis," or what is known from the perspective of an empire's borderlands, counters the tendency of occidentalist perspectives to dominate, and thus limit, understanding. The book is divided into three parts: the first chapter deals with epistemology and postcoloniality; the next three chapters deal with the geopolitics of knowledge; the last three deal with the languages and cultures of scholarship. Here the author reintroduces the analysis of civilization from the perspective of globalization and argues that, rather than one "civilizing" process dominated by the West, the continually emerging subaltern voices break down the dichotomies characteristic of any cultural imperialism. By underscoring the fractures between globalization and mundializacion, Mignolo shows the locations of emerging border epistemologies, and of post-occidental reason. In a new preface that discusses Local Histories/Global Designs as a dialogue with Hegel's Philosophy of History, Mignolo connects his argument with the unfolding of history in the first decade of the twenty-first century.
