“Memoirs for the most part are tedious,” writes Prince Adam Razumoff, “dreary stuff on the whole.” The author avoids this trap by writing his memoir as a novel... tracing his life through stops in London, Paris, Constantinople, Moscow, Washington and Montréal. As he does, he describes his encounters with the famous, the important, and the influential, and with "those who hold his heart - and his hatred". A fast-moving, compelling story, it is more than a record of one man’s life; it is an authentic history centered around the War of 1812 — the “unknown war” or “forgotten war” between United States and Canada. It pivots around deaths of innocents, of loves gone wrong, of revenge and ultimately of searches for redemption. In his introduction, Alexis Troubetzkoy describes the serendipity by which Razumoff ’s manuscript came into his hands, together with a trove of supporting documentation. Prince Troubetzkoy is an internationally published author who has written on the mysterious disappearance of Tsar Alexander I, a brief history of the Crimean War, and a history of Arctic development. More recently he authored The St. Petersburg Connection: Russian-American Friendship from Revolution to Revolution. A fellow of the Association of Russian-American Scholars in the U.S.A., he has been Headmaster of Selwyn House School in Québec, and of Appleby College and the Toronto French School in Ontario. He resides in Toronto with his wife, Hélène, while their daughter and son continue to live in Budapest and Majorca.

Joseph Conrad And Terrorism Today written by Joyce Wexler and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-30 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book explores how the anarchist fiction of Joseph Conrad can help us understand terrorism today. Conrad undermines the popular view that terrorists are fanatics. He portrays anarchists and police as counterparts driven by the human desires for autonomy and affiliation, the need to control their own lives and to be part of a group. Postcritique encourages readers to consider the accuracy of such information, and research in Terrorism Studies confirms Conrad’s insights: his characters are more realistic and his political stance is more hopeful than critics have recognized.

Even before San Francisco was founded as a city, Russian visitors, explorers, and scientists sailed to the area and made contact with both the indigenous people and representatives of the Spanish government. Although the Russian commercial colony of Fort Ross closed in 1842, the Russian presence in San Francisco continued and the community expanded to include churches, societies, businesses, and newspapers. Some came seeking opportunity, while others were fleeing religious or political persecution. In the 1920s, San Franciscoas Russian population grew exponentially as refugees of the Russian Revolution and civil war arrived, and by the 1950s, a vibrant and culturally rich Russian A(c)migrA(c) community was thriving in San Francisco. Today the 75,000 Russian speakers who live in the San Francisco Bay Area continue to pass on their heritage to their children.

"This book is the first modern scholarly monograph on the emperor Jovian (363-364). It offers a new assessment of his reign and argues that Jovian's reign was of more importance than assumed by most (ancient and modern) historians. This study argues that Jovian restored the Roman empire after the failed reign of Julian by returning to the policies of Constantius II and Constantine the Great. Jovian's general strategies were directed to get the Roman empire on its feet again militarily, administratively and religiously after the failed reign of his predecessor Julian (361-363) as well as to establish more peaceful relations with the Sasanid empire. For an emperor who ruled only eight months Jovian had an unexpected and surprising afterlife. The rarely studied and largely unknown Syriac Julian Romance offers a surprising and different perspective on person and reign of Jovian. In the Romance Jovian is presented as the ideal Christian emperor and a new Constantine. But the Romance is also an important source for Roman-Persian relations and the positioning of Syriac Christianity in the late antique world of Christendom"--
