Jane Austen S Narrative Techniques written by Massimiliano Morini and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

Combining linguistic theory with analytical concepts and literary interpretation and appreciation, Jane Austen's Narrative Techniques traces the creation and development of Austen's narrative techniques. Massimiliano Morini employs the tools developed by post-war linguistics and above all pragmatics, the study of the ways in which speakers communicate meaning, since Austen's 'wordings' can only be interpreted within the fictional context of character-character, narrator-character, narrator-reader interaction. Examining a wide range of Austen texts, from her unpublished works through masterpieces like Mansfield Park and Emma, Morini discusses familiar Austen themes, using linguistic means to shed fresh light on the question of point of view in Austen and on Austen's much-admired brilliance in creating lively and plausible dialogue. Accessibly written and informed by the latest work in linguistic and literary studies, Jane Austen's Narrative Techniques offers Austen specialists a new avenue for understanding her narrative techniques and serves as a case study for scholars and students of pragmatics and applied linguistics.

Art And Artifact In Austen written by Anna Battigelli and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-11 with Literary Criticism categories.

Jane Austen distinguished herself with genius in literature, but she was immersed in all of the arts. Austen loved dancing, played the piano proficiently, meticulously transcribed piano scores, attended concerts and art exhibits, read broadly, wrote poems, sat for portraits by her sister Cassandra, and performed in theatricals. For her, art functioned as a social bond, solidifying her engagement with community and offering order. And yet Austen’s hold on readers’ imaginations owes a debt to the omnipresent threat of disorder that often stems—ironically—from her characters’ socially disruptive artistic sensibilities and skill. Drawing from a wealth of recent historicist and materialist Austen scholarship, this timely work explores Austen’s ironic use of art and artifact to probe selfhood, alienation, isolation, and community in ways that defy simple labels and acknowledge the complexity of Austen’s thought.

What can translations reveal about the global reception of any authorship? In Jane Austen Speaks Norwegian: The Challenges of Literary Translation, Marie Nedregotten Sørbø compares two novels and six translations of them. The discussion is entirely in English, as all Norwegian versions are back-translated. This study therefore lends itself to comparisons with other languages, and aims to fill its place as one component in a worldwide field of research; how Jane Austen is understood and transmitted. Moreover, this book presents a selection of pertinent issues for any translator, including abbreviation and elaboration, style and vocabulary, and censorship. Sørbø gives vivid examples of how literary translation happens, and how it serves to interpret and refashion literature for new readerships.

Why Jane Austen written by Rachel Brownstein and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Rachel M. Brownstein considers Jane Austen as heroine, moralist, satirist, romantic, woman, and author, along with the changing notions of these categories over time and texts. She finds echoes of many of Austen's insights and techniques in contemporary Jane-o-mania, a commercially driven, erotically charged popular vogue that aims to preserve and liberate, correct and collaborate with old Jane.

Austen After 200 explores our contemporary relationship with Jane Austen in the wake of the bicentenaries of her death and the first publication of her novels. The volume begins by looking at Austen’s popular appeal and at how she is consumed today in diverse cultural venues such the digisphere, blogosphere, festivals and book clubs. It then offers new approaches to the novels within various critical contexts, including adaptation studies, fan fiction, intertextuality, and more. Collecting these new essays in one volume enables a unique view of the crossovers and divergences in engagements with Austen in different settings, and will help a comparative approach between the popular and the academic to emerge more fully in Austen studies. The book gathers insights from a range of contributors invested in new reading spaces in order to show the creative ways in which we are all adapting as we continue to read Austen’s works.

The Drawings Of Edwin Austin Abbey written by Alice Carter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-02 with categories.

Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911) was born just two years after the inaugural release of Harper's Monthly Magazine. Starting with his first published drawing in December 1870 at age 18, Abbey's life-long association with the publisher resulted in hundreds of drawings found within the pages of Harper's Monthly Magazine and Harper's Weekly as well as Harper & Brothers books. The resulting exposure throughout the U.S. and Europe secured an extensive level of recognition. Abbey had the rarefied appeal to everyone from the average reader to the most prestigious artists of the day. The inclusion of Abbey's illustrations in these periodicals helped to expand the reach of the poetry, stories and essays that they accompanied to a massive audience. This book focuses on Abbey's line art for the magazines and books published by Harper & Brothers, beginning with his earliest works as a new professional in the field. The collection contains over 350 drawings. These delineated the poetry of Robert Herrick and enhanced such books as The Deserted Village, Old Songs, She Stoops to Conquer and The Quiet Life. Drawings created for numerous short stories and poetry are displayed here as well. Also collected are Abbey's exquisite series of drawings done over the course of twenty years for The Comedies of William Shakespeare, followed by The Shakespeare Tragedies. His painstaking devotion to research while securing the appropriate costumes, props and models for his drawings was legendary. The results are some of the most revered illustrations ever created, which continue to astound aficionados and inspire artists generations after Abbey's last drawing was made. An extensive new essay by Alice A. Carter offers a fresh look at Edwin Austin Abbey, his life and career.
