This book examines the recent trend for re-performance and how this impacts on the relationship between live performance and death. Focusing specifically on examples of performance art the text analyses the relationship between performance, re-performance and death, comparing the process of re-performance to the process of mourning and arguing that both of these are processes of adaptation and survival. Using a variety of case studies, including performances by Ron Athey, Julie Tolentino, Martin O’Brien, Sheree Rose, Jo Spence and Hannah Wilke, the book explores performances which can be considered acts of re-performance, as well as performances which examine some of the critical concerns of re-performance, including notions of illness, loss and death. By drawing upon both philosophical and performance studies discourses the text takes a novel approach to the relationship between re-performance, mourning and death.

The impetus for this book, Re-envisioning Pedagogical Praxis: Decolonizing Health Life Skills and Mental Well-being Curricula for Teacher Trainees in Zimbabwe, stems from critical observations and extensive engagements on the evolving discourse surrounding Health Life Skills (HLS) and mental well-being in Zimbabwe’s tertiary education sector. Over the years, the conceptualization, operationalization, and implementation of these curricula have undergone significant transformation, influenced by local needs, global trends, and the broader decolonization movement in education. This book seeks to interrogate these shifts, offering a reflective yet forward-looking analysis of how HLS and mental well-being can be reimagined to better serve teacher trainees and, by extension, the Zimbabwean education system. As a senior lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University, Research Fellow at University of Stellenbosch, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and University Counsellor at Midlands State University, Zimbabwe, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the challenges and opportunities embedded in the teaching and learning of Health Life Skills. My experiences—spanning curriculum development, student supervision, and academic research—have revealed gaps between policy intentions and classroom realities. This book emerges from a desire to bridge those gaps by presenting a nuanced, contextually grounded framework for decolonizing and revitalizing HLS and mental well-being education in Zimbabwe. Within these pages, the book traces the historical and contemporary trajectories of HLS and mental well-being curricula in Zimbabwean tertiary institutions, situating them within broader African and global contexts. It examines the conceptual underpinnings of these modules, the structural and pedagogical challenges hindering their effective implementation, and proposes actionable strategies for improvement. Drawing from comparative analyses with other Southern African countries, the book highlights key lessons that can inform curriculum reform, policy development, and classroom practice. My own journey in this field—as a senior lecturer, university counsellor, researcher, and examiner—has deepened my understanding of the intersections between Health Life Skills, inclusive education, educational psychology, and broader societal issues such as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and mental health. Having supervised diploma, honours, and master’s students, as well as served as an internal and external examiner in Zimbabwe and South Africa, I bring both scholarly rigor and practical insights to this discourse. My previous publications on gender, educational psychology, and psychosocial challenges further enrich the perspectives shared in this book. This publication is designed to empower a diverse audience—practitioners, administrators, teacher educators, curriculum developers, policymakers, and students—by equipping them with both theoretical and practical tools to enhance HLS and mental well-being education. It is my hope that this book will stimulate critical dialogue, inspire pedagogical innovation, and contribute to the ongoing decolonization of education in Zimbabwe and beyond. Finally, I extend my deepest gratitude to the scholars, students, and institutions whose contributions have shaped this work. The journey of re-envisioning education is a collective one, and this book is but one step toward a more inclusive, responsive, and transformative pedagogical future.

This book examines the significance of body, space, sound/voice/music and objects of resistance in everyday performance of Dalit student protests, focusing on the protests which erupted after Rohith Vemula, a Dalit PhD student, died,by suicide in Hyderabad Central University on 17 January 2016 in Hyderabad, India. Rohith’s death sparked national and international outrage and led to the shutdown of the University for over a month and gave rise to the ‘Justice for Rohith movement’, which continued for over a year. Rohith’s death became a symbolic representation of other Dalit deaths due to systemic caste violence; the symbolism of his death expanded to include other marginalised groups who have faced systemic violence historically. The author highlights five distinct aesthetics prominent in Dalit student activist performance practices: (1) folk performance traditions; (2) counter-interpretation and representation of Hindu mythology and Hinduism; (3) inspiration from Ambedkar and Buddhist iconography; (4) Christian church hymns; and (5) the text of Rohith’s last letter. In each chapter, the book explores how protesters draw on aesthetics and strategies from other political movements. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies.

Mourning the Ends: Collaborative Writing and Performance is an opening, a beginning, an attempt to rethink how we can be, think, and work together. This book, authored by a multitude, explores new methodologies of collaborative scholarship for the arts and humanities within the context of the various ecological, medical, military, and epistemic ends facing the world. The authors of Mourning the Ends performed an experimental methodology as the book was researched, written, and revised by fifteen individuals situated across the globe. The writing emerged in part from a shared sense of mourning through the global pandemic and ongoing ecological catastrophes, yet the questions and arguments that are raised are immediately relevant as the rolling crises of our contemporary moment play out and further develop. The volume challenges a number of key areas in performance studies as well as foundational expectations and assumptions of the arts and humanities more broadly—namely, that writing and scholarship should be solitary endeavors. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, on September 1 1997, prompted public demonstrations of grief on an almost unprecented global scale. But, while global media coverage of the events following her death appeared to create an international 'community of mourning', popular reacions in fact reflected the complexities of the princess's public image and the tensions surrounding the popular conception of royalty. Mourning Diana examines the events which followed the death of Diana as a series of cultural-political phenomena, from the immediate aftermath as crowds gathered in public spaces and royal palaces, to the state funeral in Westminister Abbey, examining the performance of grief and the involvement of the global media in the creation of narratives and spectacles relating to the commemoration of her life. Contributors investigate the complex iconic status of Diana, as a public figure able to sustain a host of alternative identifications, and trace the posthumous romanticisation of aspects of her life such as her charity activism and her relationship with Dodi al Fayed. The contributors argue that the events following the death of Diana dramatised a complex set of cultural tensions in which the boundaries dividing nationhood and citizenship, charity and activism, private feeling and public politics, were redrawn.
