Law, Rights and Power: Re-Reading Foucault is the first collection in English to fully address the relevance of Foucault's thought for law. Michel Foucault is the best known and most cited of the late twentieth-century's 'theory' academics. His work continues to animate a range of different critical work across intellectual disciplines in the arts, humanities and social sciences. There has, however, been relatively little examination of the legal implications and applications of Foucault's work. This book fills that gap, providing an in-depth analysis of Foucault's thought as it pertains to the crucial questions of law, government and rights. This collection engages with key legal themes as they emerge, both in Foucault's work and in the contemporary scholarship that surrounds it. These include: the opposition between 'law' and 'the juridical'; legal ways of organising and processing knowled≥ sovereignty; punishment; bio-politics and governmentality; security; resistance; and, judgment. Including contributions from acknowledged experts on Foucault's work, as well as pieces by younger scholars, Law, Rights and Power: Re-Reading Foucault will be of considerable interest across a range of disciplines, including law, sociology, criminology, international relations, political theory, and philosophy.

Feminist Interpretations Of Michel Foucault written by Susan J. Hekman and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Social Science categories.
The exciting possibilities of a Foucauldian approach to issues of the subject and identity, especially as they relate to sex and the body, are detailed in several of the essays collected here. Despite the possibilities, however, Foucault's approach has raised serious questions about an equally crucial area of feminist thought - politics. Some feminist critics of Foucault have argued that his deconstruction of the concept "woman" also deconstructs the possibility of a feminist politics. Several essays explore the implications of this deconstruction for feminist politics and suggest that a Foucauldian feminist politics is not viable. Overall, this collection illustrates the range of interest Foucault's thought has generated among feminist thinkers and both the advantages and liabilities of his approach for the development of feminist theory and politics.

Re Reading Leonardo written by Claire Farago and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Art categories.
For nearly three centuries Leonardo da Vinci's work was known primarily through the abridged version of his Treatise on Painting, first published in Paris in 1651 and soon translated into all the major European languages. Here for the first time is a study that examines the historical reception of this vastly influential text. This collection charts the varied interpretations of Leonardo's ideas in French, Italian, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, Flemish, Greek, and Polish speaking environments where the Trattato was an important resource for the academic instruction of artists, one of the key sources drawn upon by art theorists, and widely read by a diverse network of artists, architects, biographers, natural philosophers, translators, astronomers, publishers, engineers, theologians, aristocrats, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and collectors. The cross-cultural approach employed here demonstrates that Leonardo's Treatise on Painting is an ideal case study through which to chart the institutionalization of art in Europe and beyond for 400 years. The volume includes original essays by scholars studying a wide variety of national and institutional settings. The coherence of the volume is established by the shared subject matter and interpretative aim: to understand how Leonardo's ideas were used. With its focus on the active reception of an important text overlooked in studies of the artist's solitary genius, the collection takes Leonardo studies to a new level of historical inquiry. Leonardo da Vinci's most significant contribution to Western art was his interpretation of painting as a science grounded in geometry and direct observation of nature. One of the most important questions to emerge from this study is, what enabled the same text to produce so many different styles of painting?

Jacques Lacan and Michel Foucault are often cast as intellectual adversaries, their legacies marked by differences in method, lineages, and analytical priorities. Yet beneath their distinct projects lies a shared ambition: to decenter the Western conception of the subject while critically engaging with the notion of subjectivity in post-Kantian thought. This book examines Foucault’s critical project through the lens of Lacan’s theory of the four discourses, introduced in Seminar XVII: The Other Side of Psychoanalysis (1969-70). Divided into two parts, Reading Foucault through Lacan unfolds as a dialogue between the discourses of the Hysteric and the Analyst. Part I, “The Hysteric,” reframes Foucault’s genealogical critique from the early to mid-1970s as a form of hysterical questioning directed at Kant’s transcendental legacy and its aftermath. Through an exploration of how violence and embodied resistance interact in a discursive framework, Part I uncovers the epistemological fractures that mark the modern subject. Part II, “The Analyst,” examines Foucault’s redefinition of Kantian critique as a historically situated engagement with the present. Building on Lacan’s claim that analytic experience begins with the hystericization of discourse, this section views Foucault’s re-alignment with Kant as retroactively constituting the transformation from Hysteric to Analyst. Addressing themes such as parrhesia, transference, and the ethics of speaking, Part II examines discourse as a social link that transcends fixed identities to inhabit new modes of being. Drawing on newly available English translations of Foucault’s lectures and Lacan’s seminars, this book bridges two key trajectories in French thought and offers valuable insights for scholars of psychoanalysis, critical theory, and social philosophy.

Re Reading Leavis written by G. Day and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-10-11 with Literary Criticism categories.
This book offers a much needed reassessment of F.R. Leavis. Gary Day argues that post-structuralist theory has defined itself in opposition to Leavis when in fact there are certain parallels between the two types of criticism. Day also draws attention to the connections between Leavis's early work and the emergent discourses of consumerism and scientific management. In particular he notes how at the centre of each is an image of the body and he analyses what this means for Leavis's conception of reading. By situating Leavis in relation to the concerns of post-structuralism and by locating him firmly in his historical context, Day is able to chart how far criticism can justly claim to be oppositional. At the same time, Day is able to recuperate from Leavis's work a notion of value; a topic which is becoming increasingly important in literary and cultural studies today.
