After two decades since the disintegration of Soviet Union in 1991, the largest and the most populist socialist state — the People's Republic of China — does not only manage to stay intact, but has also emerged as the second largest economy in the world. Moreover, its political, diplomatic, military and cultural reaches have been extended to various parts of the world. There have been many factual and fictional discussions and debates in the public domains, on China's apparent rise either as a threat or an opportunity. This book will take on these discussions and debates to provide theory-informed empirical studies regarding a few research questions: How does the People's Republic of China manage to rise and achieve global reaches? How can we effectively conceptualize China's global reaches? What internal and external strategic and security measures have Chinese state adopted in order to maintain such vast and far-reaching constellations of domestic-external nexuses? We consider that the idea and concept of “Global China” is perhaps the most viable analytical instrument to capture such increasingly complex phenomena in association with the rise of China. Contents:Globalization: China's Challenges (Joseph Y S Cheng)Urbanization: Earning Money but Losing Ethnic Identity? (Yuen Fun So)Changing Faces of Chinese Labor Regimes: Case Studies in Beijing and Shenzhen (Ting Wang and Chris King-Chi Chan)Power and Surveillance in Everyday Life (Flora Sapio)Globalization and the Development of Civil Society in China (Joseph Y S Cheng)New Citizens in Urban China: From Exclusion to Inclusion (Xiaoqing Tang and Raymond K H Chan)Re-Inventing Confucianism: Return, Contradictions, and Possibilities (Anne Cheng)Resisting Global China: Local Resistance to China's Resource-Led Diplomacy in the Philippines and Beyond (Pak Nung Wong, Kathlene Aquino, Kristinne Lara de Leon and Yuen Fun So)China in Myanmar: Naypyidaw's New Great Game (Ricky Yue)China's Maritime Power Play in Indian Ocean since 1962: India's Assessment and Response (Commodore Seshadri Vasan)Dragon in the Tear Drop: Regional Dynamics of Growing Chinese Influence in Sri Lanka (S I Keethaponcalan)China in Africa: A Reflection on the Reconfiguration and Cross-Continental Implications of its Power and Political Economy (Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo)Conclusion: Whither 'Global China'? How should Christianity relate to Chinese culture? That question has engaged the minds of both Chinese and Western Christians for several centuries. Lit-sen Chang (1904-1996) was brought up as a Buddhist and educated in the Confucian classics as well as in modern political philosophy. He later delved deeply into Daoism as well. After World War II, he founded Jiangnan University in order to "exterminate" Christianity and revive Eastern religion. Conversion to Christianity in 1950 radically altered the course of his life. He studied at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and then joined the faculty, teaching missions and writing prolifically on theology and apologetics, especially on the relationship of Christianity to Chinese culture. His Critique of Indigenous Theology and Critique of Humanism are published here in English for the first time, and provide excellent examples of his wide learning, insightful analysis, powerful writing, and firm commitment to historic Christianity.

China has evolved from a nation with local and regional security interests to a major economic and political power with global interests, investments, and political commitments. It now requires a military that can project itself around the globe, albeit on a limited scale, to secure its interests. Therefore, as Larry M. Wortzel explains, the Chinese Communist Party leadership has charged the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with new and challenging missions that require global capabilities. Advances in technology and the development of indigenous weapons platforms in China, combined with reactions to modern conflicts, have produced a military force very different from that which China has fielded in the past. Wortzel presents a clear and sobering picture of the PLA’s modernization effort as it expands into space and cyberspace, and as it integrates operations in the traditional domains of war. This book will appeal to the specialist in security and foreign policy issues in Asia as well as to the person interested in arms control, future warfare, and global military strategies. The book puts China’s military growth into historical context for readers of recent military and diplomatic history.

China And The International System written by Xiaoming Huang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-20 with Social Science categories.

This book considers the evolving relationship between China and the international system, and the interaction between a China of profound change in its identity, capability, and influence, and an international system that is itself experiencing a process of far-reaching transformation. It develops an analytical framework that allows us to capture, understand and explain a more dynamic pattern of agent-structure interaction in China’s relationship with the international system. By demonstrating a more dynamic and mutually constitutive relationship between China and the international system, the book explores the extent to which both transform themselves in the process, and provides a fuller and more effective assessment of the evolving nature of the relationship. In doing so, it addresses key issues in the current literature on the relationship of China and the international system, and helps close the gap in our knowledge of the conditions and consequences of change and stability in the international system as a result of the change in distributions of power, capability and influence among nation-states.
