Reading Across Modern Arabic written by Sonja Mejcher-Atassi and has been published by Dr Ludwig Reichert this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Arabic literature categories.

Interrelations of literature and art, word and image, are manifold. However, they have remained largely unexplored when it comes to literature and art in the Arab world. This book aims at introducing interarts studies to Middle Eastern studies and, at the same time, hopes to widen the horizon of interarts studies, which has primarily dealt with Western literary and artistic traditions and represents an interdisciplinary field of research in comparative literature. After methodological considerations and preliminary thoughts on changing notions of literature and art in the modern Arab world, the book focuses on three case studies, examining the rapport of Arab writers with art, be it as an art critic, an art lover, or an artist in his/her own right. It in particular looks at Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Abd al-Rahman Munif and Etel Adnan who contributed profoundly to modern Arabic literature in the second half of the twentieth century. In correspondence with their life trajectories - spanning the Arab world from Bethlehem to Jerusalem, Baghdad, Amman, Beirut, Cairo, and Damascus, and beyond the Arab world from Cambridge to London, Belgrade, Paris, and California - it does not focus on one country but gives testimony to the transnational as well as transcultural character of cultural production in the Arab world. It then sets out to read selected literary texts relationally, across the fields of literature and art, breaking with conventional ways of reading and seeing. In reading across modern Arabic literature and art the book sets out to study artistic practices, be they word or image oriented, in context and thus contributes to a better understanding of modern Arabic literature and art beyond the confines of the single disciplines. Its interdisciplinary approach opens new perspectives on modern Arabic literature and art alike. The book is addressed at scholars and students in Middle Eastern studies, comparative literature, art history, and cultural history, as well as at a general public interested in literature and art beyond the Western canon.

Learning Modern Standard Arabic written by Marwan Hassan and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-21 with categories.

The primary goal of this book is to help non-native speakers, who are in the intermediate levels of learning the Arabic language, improve their skills to begin reading the Holy Qur'an and grasp a better understanding of its text. This publication will concentrate on shortening the period of time it takes to reach mastery of reading and comprehending Arabic at a relatively basic level, which provides students with the foundation needed to comprehend the literature style of the Qur'an. The idea behind this simple, yet overlooked process is to provide the student with the necessary skills in addition to the basic skills required to process information during the act of reading. The book adopted the teaching of "Juz' Amma" (30) beginning with very short Surahs, where the teacher walks along-side the learner. For example, within this publication, surat An-Naas, is a great beginning point because it contains a limited amount of vocabulary and gives a good perspective on how to understand the Holy Qur'an's meanings through its unique style after studying the basics of the Arabic language. After the student demonstrates a solid understanding and higher proficiency of reading MSA (Modern Standard Arabic), the teacher will present the Qur'anic script to the student and have him or her read directly from the Holy Qur'an. Adopting this method associated with other strategies will help achieve two goals in teaching and learning: the first being, help those who are fascinated by the Arabic language get comfortable with the terminology and the expressions of the language of the Holy Qur'an. The second goal achieved is having those who understand the Holy Qur'an interpret the information to others. Ultimately, the students will learn Modern Standard Arabic, which will then be applied in reading and understanding the Holy Qur'an (Tafseer of Qur'anic content). The scope of this method is to assist as many people as possible. It targets those who are studying within the field of the Arabic language and culture, as well as students and teachers of Islamic studies, language institutes, Islamic schools, and Arabic schools.

This dazzling anthology features the work of seventy-nine outstanding writers from all over the Arab-speaking world, from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east, Syria in the north to Sudan in the south. Edited by Denys Johnson-Davies, called by Edward Said “the leading Arabic-to-English translator of our time,” this treasury of Arab voices is diverse in styles and concerns, but united by a common language. It spans the full history of modern Arabic literature, from its roots in western cultural influence at the end of the nineteenth century to the present-day flowering of Naguib Mahfouz’s literary sons and daughters. Among the Egyptian writers who laid the foundation for the Arabic literary renaissance are the great Tawfik al-Hakim; the short story pioneer Mahmoud Teymour; and Yusuf Idris, who embraced Egypt’s vibrant spoken vernacular. An excerpt from the Sudanese writer Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North, one of the Arab world’s finest, appears alongside the Libyan writer Ibrahim al-Koni’s tales of the Tuaregs of North Africa, the Iraqi writer Mohamed Khudayir’s masterly story “Clocks Like Horses,” and the work of such women writers as Lebanon’s Hanan al-Shaykh and Morocco’s Leila Abouzeid.

Modern Arabic literature remains little known and poorly understood despite growing curiosity among European readers. This brief introduction offers a unique overview, focusing on developments over the last fifty years. It provides a guide to the literary landscape, indicating the major landmarks in the shape of authors, ideas and debates. The picture that emerges shows that the literature of the modern Arab world, Europe's closest neighbour, is not so far from us as we are sometimes encouraged to think. A timely contribution to the dialogue between East and West, bringing modern Arabic literature into the mainstream for English-speaking readers. 'Tresilian's book is not only informative about its subject but also provides thought-provoking messages to the general reader.' -- Denys Johnson Davies Banipal

Arabic Voices is a two-part series designed to provide students of Arabic with an opportunity to hear and study authentic Arabic as it is spoken by native speakers today. Unlike the scripted materials read by voice actors used in many course books, Arabic Voices offers dozens of audio essays spoken naturally and off-the-cuff by individuals from across the Arab World. Each of the twelve native speakers has contributed audio essays in both Modern Standard Arabic and his or her native dialect, which have then been transcribed for study. In Arabic Voices 1 and 2, you will hear Egyptian Arabic, Levantine Arabic (Lebanese Arabic, Palestinian Arabic, Jordanian Arabic), Yemeni Arabic, Tunisian Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, as well as Modern Standard Arabic. MP3s are available for free download at www.lingualism.com. The segments in Modern Standard Arabic provide valuable insight into native speakers’ range of style and proficiency in the language. The segments in colloquial Arabic dialects offer a fascinating look into the many varieties of Arabic, and how similar and different they really are from one another. Fine-tuning your listening to the idiosyncrasies of each dialect will truly help you better understand spoken Arabic. Each “segment" (audio essay chapter) contains: 1) exercises to sharpen your listening skills and increase how much you can understand, whatever your level 2) in-chapter answers to the exercises (no having to flip back and forth to the back of the book) 3) a voweled transcript of the audio with side-by-side English translations 4) cultural and linguistic notes 5) web links to articles and videos related to the segment 6) select segments feature grammar focuses with additional exercises.
