The essays in this volume examine the relationship between ancient fiction in the Greco-Roman world and early Jewish and Christian narratives. This volume in honour of John Morgan contains seventeen essays by colleagues, research students, and post-doctoral researchers who have worked with and been influenced by him during his 40 years in Swansea, up to and beyond his retirement in 2015. It is designed to reflect the esteem and affection in which the honorand is held, as teacher, supervisor, colleague, and friend. All the contributions reflect John Morgan's interests, with a particular focus on narrative, which has always been at the forefront of his teaching and research: he has elucidated the forms, structures, strategies, and functions of numerous ancient narratives, especially fictional, in a voluminous body of scholarship. The contributors consider a wide range of narratives, extending from those which show the influence of older stories on the beginnings of ancient Greek civilisation, through various narrative genres in different periods of antiquity, and up to later eras when the impact of Greek and Roman learning, stories, and ideas has been felt. The core of this volume contains discussions of narratives from the Roman imperial period, since this is the area to which the majority of John Morgan's work has been devoted and where his research has seen him become a world-leader in the study of the ancient Greek novel. Several of the contributions, at various stages of development, were delivered and discussed at gatherings organised under the aegis of KYKNOS, the Centre for Research on the Narrative Literatures of the Ancient World, which was established at Swansea in 2004 at John Morgan's initiative.

A number of ancient novelists were skilful storytellers and resourceful literary artists, and their works are often carefully individualised presentations of an ancient and distinguished heritage. Ancient Fiction, first published in 1984, examines the tales retold by these novelists in light of more recently discovered Near Eastern texts, and in this way offers a tentative solution to Rohde’s celebrated problem about the origins of the Greek novel. Among the surprises that emerge are an ancient stratum of the Arabian Nights and a possible Tristan-Romance, as well as an animal Satyricon and a human Golden Ass. This new framework is, however, incidental to an examination of the achievements of ancient novelists in their own right. In presenting character, structuring narrative, imposing a veneer of sophistication or contriving a religious ethos, these writers demonstrate that their work is worthy of sympathetic study, rather dismissal as the pulp fiction of the ancient world.

From Eusebius of Caesarea, who first compiled a collection of martyr narratives around 300, to Thierry Ruinart, whose Acta primorum martyrum sincera et selecta was published in 1689, the selection and study of early hagiographic narratives has been founded on an assumption that there existed documents written at the time of martyrdom, or very close to it. As a result, a search for authenticity has been and continues to be central, even in the context of today's secular scholarship. But, as Éric Rebillard contends, the alternative approach, to set aside entirely the question of the historical reliability of martyr narratives, is not satisfactory either. Instead, he argues that martyr narratives should be consider as fluid "living texts," written anonymously and received by audiences not as precise historical reports but as versions of the story. In other words, the form these texts took, between fact and fiction, made it possible for audiences to readily accept the historicity of the martyr while at the same time not expect to hear or read a truthful account. In The Early Martyr Narratives, Rebillard considers only accounts of Christian martyrs supposed to have been executed before 260, and only those whose existence is attested in sources that can be dated to before 300. The resulting small corpus contains no texts in the form of legal protocols, traditionally viewed as the earliest, most official and authentic records, nor does it include any that can be dated to a period during which persecution of Christians is known to have taken place. Rather than deduce from this that they are forgeries written for the sake of polemic or apologetic, Rebillard demonstrates how the literariness of the narratives creates a fictional complicity that challenges and complicates any claims of these narratives to be truthful.

New approaches to ancient literature, and new courses in literature in translation, have made the ancient novel a fertile field for scholar and student alike. This volume extends the boundaries of the subject beyond the 'canon' of the romances properly called and examines Greek fictional writing in the widest possible context, including texts that are not normally treated as novels, such as various kinds of sacred or quasi-historical texts. The editors hope to open up the definition of Greek fiction to further debate and to create cross-currents between scholars working in diverse fields.
