Reading, using vision or touch, translates abstact marks on a page into an understanding of ideas. The perceptual, linguistic and cognitive processes involved in sighted reading have been widely studied, but the use of touch raises new issues. Drawing on her research with novice and fluent braille readers, Susanna Millar examines how people initially process braille and how skill with sounds, words, meaning and spelling patterns influence processing. The main focus is on braille but findings on the 'Moon' script, vibrotactile devices, maps and 'icons' are also considered in the context of their practical implications and access to computer technology. Reading by Touch will be of enormous interest to all teachers and students of tactual reading systems, and makes a significant contribution to theories in cognitive and developmental psychology.

The Hand Of The Interpreter written by G. F. Mitrano and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

This collection of essays by scholars and artists of different disciplines and from different countries is designed to navigate the labyrinth of contemporary aesthetic ideologies with the aim of reassessing how we read - both the way in which texts touch us, and we them. Theory has transformed texts into mute interlocutors exposed to infinite indeterminacy. While the response to this sense of silence that undermines meaning is often informed by a nostalgia for older notions of close reading, the essays in this volume work towards a re-evaluation of key subjects such as reader, writer and text. The contributors engage with topics such as digital books, popular culture, alternative ways of book-making, visual-verbal collaborations and thematic explorations of the hand in literature.

The Digital Reading Condition written by Maria Engberg and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This volume offers a critical overview of digital reading practices and scholarly efforts to analyze and understand reading in the mediatized landscape. Building on research about digital reading, born-digital literature, and digital audiobooks, The Digital Reading Condition explores reading as part of a broader cultural shift encompassing many forms of media and genres. Bringing together research from media and literary studies, digital humanities, scholarship on reading and learning, as well as sensory studies and research on multimodal and multisensory media reception, the authors address and challenge print-biased conceptions of reading that are still prevalent in research, whether the reading medium is print or digital. They argue that the act of reading itself is changing, and rather than rejecting digital media as unsuitable for sustained or focused reading practices, they argue that the complex media landscape challenges us to rethink how to define reading as a mediated practice. Presenting a truly interdisciplinary perspective on digital reading practices, this volume will appeal to scholars and graduate students in communication, media studies, new media and technology, literature, digital humanities, literacy studies, composition, and rhetoric.
