The Culture of Reading and the Teaching of English' aims to do for contemporary literary and cultural theory what I.A. Richard's 'Practical Criticism' did for literary formalism. Kathleen McCormick analyzes current approaches to reading theory and the teaching of literary and related cultural texts. She moves beyond 'theory', with its tendency to become arcane and elitest, and instead examines the 'cultures' of reading - its ideologies, institutions and classroom practices. She presents cognitive, expressivist and culturally-based approaches to reading, and then considers a variety of institutional and classroom practices from the writing of formal essays to the use of textbooks. This represents a crucial intervention in debates around the reformation of new curricula in schools and the 'politically correct' classroom currently raging in both Britain and America. 'The Culture of Reading' is much more than a classroom-oriented approach to contemporary literary and cultural theory. Through accounts of teaching experiences, student writing, professional conferences and curriculum battles on both sides of the Atlantic, she tells an often personal, frequently amusing account of the discoveries of one teacher - herself a widely published critic, writer and lecturer - as she finds how theory is mediated in very different institutions, social contexts and classroom situations.

Understanding Cultures Through Their Key Words written by Anna Wierzbicka and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-08-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book develops the dual themes that languages can differ widely in their vocabularies, and are also sensitive indices to the cultures to which they belong. Wierzbicka seeks to demonstrate that every language has "key concepts," expressed in "key words," which reflect the core values of a given culture. She shows that cultures can be revealingly studied, compared, and explained to outsiders through their key concepts, and that the analytical framework necessary for this purpose is provided by the "natural semantic metalanguage," based on lexical universals, that the author and colleagues have developed on the basis of wide-ranging cross-linguistic investigations. Appealing to anthropologists, psychologists, and philosophers as well as linguists, this book demonstrates that cultural patterns can be studied in a verifiable, rigorous, and non-speculative way, on the basis of empirical evidence and in a coherent theoretical framework.

In one of his many moments of wisdom, the great Italian film director Frederico Fellini once observed that "A different language is a different vision of life," or, in other words, one cannot really understand a language without learning about the culture behind it. Designed for B1- B2 intermediate-level learners of English, in school or for private reading, this book is a collection of carefully written articles about events, places and people that form part of the cultural background to contemporary life in Britain and the USA. It will appeal to anyone, student or teacher, for whom learning English means more than just learning the language. Each of the twenty-seven units is made up of a reading text - average length 500 to 600 words - accompanied by a vocabulary guide and up to three exercises covering comprehension and expression, grammar and / or vocabulary., Most of the twenty-seven units present key events, places or characters that form part of the cultural background to contemporary life in Britain or the USA. A couple of units, more anecdotal, reflect mentalities and attitudes in the English speaking world - attitudes that may seem normal to Britons or Americans, but rather surprising to some students from different cultural backgrounds.

Within its wide boundaries, culture creates written and visual reflection areas for itself. As the reflection area expands through time, space and nature, it becomes richer, and, in doing so, it needs to be appreciated. The cultural reflection of historical accumulation leaves us in front of an immense mirror. In general terms, this book presents the reader with the intertwined relationships between culture and literature, culture and language, and culture and history or art history. More specifically, it investigates the joy of a birth, a funeral ritual, the merriness of a melody, and the taste of a meal as they are reflected within the texts that Asia has accumulated throughout its history. Its central concern is the investigation of issues related to culture and how it is reflected in literature, language, or history in a particular place.

I'M GILULI OF THE RED MIGHTY NATIONLAND. Fifty-four years ago, the Corporate World War of 2050 annihilated a bunch of animal and insect species on the planet, not to mention billions of people, but the good news is that we were born - the Red Mighties. They don't like us. They call us mutants. I'm attending their high school in the afternoons to try to understand them better, which believe me is no cup of tea, except for one particular Pre-ev guy who I could drink right up. Meanwhile, they're trying to steal our pure water source and stop us from saving the Red Mighty babies born to their people. I want to help... but I'm not sure I can do what they're asking. "Backbiters is as unique and fresh as its heroine, embracing openness to whatever forms evolution might take us. An enjoyable and satisfying read that will leave you looking at the world in a different way." - Colleen Chen, author of Dysmorphic Kingdom "With a compelling, authentic and energetic voice, Giluli pulls us into her world and her adventure. Righteous and endearing, she forges ahead into the complexities of growing up at the epicenter of clashing ideologies, political tensions and ah yes, high school drama. I couldn't wait to see how she'd come through it all!" - Soramimi Hanarejima, author of Visits to the Confabulatorium "North Korea blasts a nuclear bomb on its southern neighbor, and the resulting corporate warfare changes history and human beings... Debra Leea Glasheen depicts an intricate plot in a masterfully -constructed, highly-detailed futuristic world." - Marcin Dolecki, author of Philosopher's Crystal

Illustrated by an empirical study of English as a Foreign Language reading in Argentina, this book argues for a different approach to the theoretical rationales and methodological designs typically used to investigate cultural understanding in reading, in particular foreign language reading. It presents an alternative approach which is more authentic in its methods, more educational in its purposes, and more supportive of international understanding as an aim of language teaching in general and English language teaching in particular.
