The Culture of Reading and the Teaching of English' aims to do for contemporary literary and cultural theory what I.A. Richard's 'Practical Criticism' did for literary formalism. Kathleen McCormick analyzes current approaches to reading theory and the teaching of literary and related cultural texts. She moves beyond 'theory', with its tendency to become arcane and elitest, and instead examines the 'cultures' of reading - its ideologies, institutions and classroom practices. She presents cognitive, expressivist and culturally-based approaches to reading, and then considers a variety of institutional and classroom practices from the writing of formal essays to the use of textbooks. This represents a crucial intervention in debates around the reformation of new curricula in schools and the 'politically correct' classroom currently raging in both Britain and America. 'The Culture of Reading' is much more than a classroom-oriented approach to contemporary literary and cultural theory. Through accounts of teaching experiences, student writing, professional conferences and curriculum battles on both sides of the Atlantic, she tells an often personal, frequently amusing account of the discoveries of one teacher - herself a widely published critic, writer and lecturer - as she finds how theory is mediated in very different institutions, social contexts and classroom situations.

Generally, in language teaching, the emphasis is on the development of four separate skills: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and speaking. However, language teachers and scholars often refer to a fifth skill, which is culture. It is difficult to imagine language teaching without referring in one way or another to the target culture; therefore, culture has always been present in the teaching process. But what does this skill imply and how should it be included into the teaching–learning process? Compared to grammar or vocabulary, culture is more difficult to define; therefore, it is not clear what and how it should be taught. “TEACHING ENGLISH CULTURE THROUGH C.A.L.L.” se adreseaza studentilor, cadrelor didactice inscrise la diverse examene de perfectionare sau interesate de alternative in predare.Lucrarea este unica prin multitudinea de situatii prezentate, abordarea unei teme de actualitate in contextul predarii prin intermediul calculatorului si al integrarii culturii in predarea limbii engleze precum si prin utilitatea planurilor de lectii ce insotesc partea aplicativa.

In the context of the growing diversity of contemporary societies and the central importance of the electronic media, the place of popular culture in the school curriculum has become an increasingly controversial political issue. Based on in-depth research in an ethnically mixed, working-class secondary school, Cultural Studies Goes to School is concerned with the relationships between young people's involvement in popular culture outside school and their experiences of media education within the formal school curriculum. The first part of the book provides a detailed analysis of students' readings and uses of popular media, ranging from computer games and soap operas to comics and rap music. It offers a further challenge to received notions of young people as passive victims of ideological manipulation by the media and develops a social theory of reading that acknowledges the complex roles of gender, race and social class. The second part describes a number of classroom projects involving both critical and practical aspects of media education. Through analysis of students' work in a range of media, including photography, video and print, the authors develop a challenging theory of learning about popular culture and its place in the school curriculum. This book offers an exciting and accessible account of young people reading and making popular culture, which challenges many of the political claims and received wisdoms of academic Cultural Studies.

This book recognizes and embraces the complexities of modern English teaching. It presents English teachers and teacher educators with a critical view of current professional issues and concerns in the belief that these groups need, and want, to participate in curricular and professional reform movements that affect them and their students. The book examines such issues as the interconnectedness of the study of language, literature, and composition; curricular problems in language instruction in teacher education; the relationship between our traditional notions of literature study and our emerging view of literacy in the contemporary information age; and the ways in which current theory and research can be translated into innovative designs for the teaching of written composition. On Literacy and Its Teaching is a powerful response to the current challenge for innovation and change in English teacher education. With its broad scope, it provides a balanced overview and timely analysis of the field of English Education.
