With persuasive instruction and personal examples, George Martin shows you how to read and understand Scripture in ways that help us hear what God is saying to us and that draw us nearer to him in prayer. In the most extensive revision yet of his best-selling classic Reading Scripture as the Word of God, this edition brings God's Word to life for beginners through seasoned veterans of Bible study. How can I get more out of reading Scripture? What can I do to understand Scripture more clearly? How can I hear what God is saying to me through Scripture? How should I apply the messages of the Bible to my life? Thus, the Bible becomes a window to God, so He can speak to our hearts as well as our heads. The book begins with practical suggestions for reading Scripture in order to understand both the context and the purpose for which it was written. It goes on to discuss how God reveals himself through the words of Scripture and the role of the Holy Spirit as He speaks directly to you through the text. Study guides at the end of each chapter, interesting sidebars, and directions to internet resources will stimulate personal reflection and also provide the basis for small-group discussion of this eminently practical, yet heart-centered, approach to understanding the Scriptures.

The Seed and the Soil explores the power of the Bible that brings about God’s transforming and liberating purposes, as well as its power as an often oppressively misused text. Characterised by a wide variety of storytelling, this book is accessible to all that read it. What People are saying about the book! Reading Pauline Hoggarth's book, one is aware that everything she writes is deeply rooted in her own life of engagement with Scripture and in her wide experience of the Bible's impact in many different cultural contexts. She is refreshingly open about both the difficulties many people have in engaging with Scripture and the difficulties Scripture itself presents. Richard Bauckham Emeritus Professor of New Testament Studies, University of St Andrews My shelves are full of books about reading the Bible, but Pauline’s new book is outstanding. It is fresh and thoughtful, grounded in personal reality and clearly the fruit of a lifetime of international ministry and friendship, and deep engagement with God’s Word. To those beginning with the Bible, Pauline passes on a wealth of practical insights, and more seasoned readers will be challenged to think more widely and more wisely. Revd Jenny Petersen Faith at QMUL [This] is a more than worthy addition to our bulging library. However, this isn’t a comfortable, intellectually stimulating book about the background to the Bible or some arcane aspect of biblical theology; it is a challenging book about engaging with Scripture . . . If someone were to ask me to recommend books to help them with reading the Bible, I would have no hesitation in suggesting How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth for help in understanding the text of the Bible and The Seed and the Soil: Engaging with the Word of God as a help in letting the Bible get under your skin and transform your thinking and actions. Eddie Arthur Kouya.net Speaking with a depth of pastoral sensitivity and cultural insight, this immensely powerful book is grounded with an understanding of the difficulties encountered by many Christians reading the Bible today. The writer's passion to help others identify and overcome their own challenges includes questions for personal reflection. Amy Roche CMS Mission Partner and Research Student at Durham University

Sensing God written by Roger Ferlo and has been published by Cowley Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-01 with Religion categories.

Think of all the senses you use when you pick up a Bible. What do you see? What do you smell? What do you touch? Reading scripture attentively is more than a matter of sight. Most of us have been taught to think about God in visual terms, yet the very subject matter of scripture—our relationship with the fullness of God—makes irresistible demands upon all of our senses if we are to begin to understand anything about God. In these meditations on stories from the New Testament, Roger Ferlo shows us how to read the Bible in a “full-bodied” way, with all the senses attuned. For just as a printed recipe cannot substitute for a mouth-watering feast, so the Bible must be brought to life through the senses. Its stories must be seen, heard, touched, smelled, and tasted. Only then, Ferlo believes, can we truly begin to encounter in our lives the Word of God to us in scripture. Sensing God is one of our series of Cowley Cloister Books: smaller format, gift edition books designed for meditative and devotional reading.

Seized By Truth written by Prof. Joel B. Green and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-01 with Religion categories.

We read the Bible and interpret Scripture in order to live in grace-filled relation to God's divine purpose. When we approach the Bible as Scripture author, Joel Green, takes seriously the faith statement that the Bible is our Book; these scriptures are our Scripture. We are not reading someone else's mail--as though reading the Bible had to do foremost with recovering an ancient meaning intended for someone else and then translating its principles for use in our own lives. When we recall that we are the people of God to whom the Bible is addressed as Scripture, we realize that the fundamental transformation is not the transformation of an ancient message into a contemporary meaning, bur rather the transformation of our lives by means of God's Word. This means that reading the Bible as Scripture has less to do with what tools we bring to the task, however important these may be, and more to do with our own dispositions as we come to our engagement with Scripture. We come not so much to retrieve facts or to gain information, but to be formed and ultimately, transformed. Scripture does not present us with texts to be mastered but with a Word, God's Word, intent on mastering us, on shaping our lives.
