Parables make up one-third of Jesus' speech in the New Testament. In this volume, Richard Lischer provides an expert guide to these parables and proposes an important distinction between reading and interpreting the parables. Emphasizing the importance of reading the parables versus interpreting them, Lischer asserts that reading offers a kind of breathing space to explore historical, literary, theological, and socio-political dimensions of the parables and their various meanings, whereas interpreting implies an expert and critical position that must be defended. In this volume, Lischer lays out four theories for reading parables: 1) parables obscure truth; 2) parables teach many truths; 3) parables teach one truth; and 4) parables undermine the truth. Ultimately, he concludes that biblical parables undermine dominant myths called "the truth" to shine light on the Truth that is Jesus, God's presence with us.

When I first became a Christian reading the parables was like a foreign language to me. As I disciplined myself to keep reading they slowly began to make sense. I do not believe that I am the only one to experience this struggle. The aim of this series is to make the unfamiliar familiar, and to provide tools for practical application in your life. I hope the kingdom of God and His grace become accessible to anyone who picks up this book.

Dao De Jing is an ancient wisdom book, purportedly written by Laozi, who flourished in the sixth century BCE according to the Chinese tradition. It is comprised of eighty-one short poems of which the source is diverse, ranging from personal life to communal and political life. It uses abundant metaphors taken from nature such as water, dust, river, wood, and valley. Laozi reminds his readers to rethink their worldview and purpose of life. Parables of Jesus also are stories about life, ranging from personal identity to social justice. Laozi and Jesus lived in different places at different times. Yet they share a passion and vision to make a better world, full of mercy, justice, and peace. Laozi asks his audience to appreciate the power of smallness in their perspectives. Likewise, in the Mustard Seed, Jesus also helps his audience to see the potential of a small seed that may grow miraculously to several feet tall. This book reads Jesus' parables from the perspective of the Dao De Jing. There is a new translation of the Dao De Jing in the Appendix.

Parables Unplugged written by Lauri Thurén and has been published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Religion categories.

The parables of Jesus have long been read either as allegories encoding Christian theology or as tantalizing clues to the authentic voice of Jesus. Thurn proposes instead to read the parables "unplugged" from any assumptions beyond those given in the narrative situation in the text, on the common-sense premise that the very form of the parable works to propose a (sometimes startling) resolution to a particular problem. Thurn applies his method to the parables in Luke, exploring the Evangelist's specific narrative purposes in the use of individual parables.

A thoroughly researched and deeply insightful exploration of Jesus’ teachings from the Gospels. Over a third of the Gospels by Matthew, Mark, and Luke contain Jesus’ parables. In the Book of Matthew, we learn that this style of teaching fulfilled G-d’s prophecy: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world." But how do we best interpret these vital lessons? The Parables of Jesus Explained offers a close reading of fifty two parables from the Bible. Author Stephen Tvedten explains that a parable is a word-picture which uses an earthly image or story to illustrate a spiritual truth or lesson. It creates a mini-drama that helps define the unknown and unseen by using both the visible and the known. This volume includes close readings of some of the best-known parables, such as The Parable of the Good Samaritan and The Parable of the Prodigal Son, as well as lesser-known stories, such as The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
