Excerpt from Readings in American Literature This volume is designed to accompany the editor's American Literature, and the selections were made to represent the authors there treated. While it is intended that the history and the Readings be used together, the latter have been compiled in accordance with suggestions from many sources; and the editor believes that they will prove useful with any history of American literature. No effort has been made to include college entrance requirements, most of which are available in cheap and attractive editions. On the other hand, more space than is usual in a book of this kind is given to literature produced before 1800. This has been done because the material is quaint and interesting, and is less accessible to high school students than nineteenth century writings. The editor feels confident that results will repay a generous expenditure of time on the early writers. In preparing the Readings, the best texts accessible have been used; but it has not seemed necessary in a high school book to indicate the editions, unless required by the copyright provisions of the authorized publishers. Excerpt from Readings From American Literature a Textbook for Schools and Colleges That this volume of "Readings from American Literature" was made because of a real need is, perhaps, its first and best excuse for being. The editors found in their own classrooms the demand for a compact anthology, ranging in time from colonial days to the present and adapted to the high-school student and the college undergraduate. Because of this they have essayed a task, not simple in itself, but simplified to a degree, in their case, by experience in teaching the material presented here. It is happily a fact that to-day we are not neglectful in the school curriculum of a historical survey of American literature. Better still, we link such study with history proper in a natural correlation that vitalizes both. But to read about an author is not enough; we must read his works - all of which is trite, but so true that it may be said safely many times. Not all schools are so fortunate as to have adequate and extensive reference shelves. Nor do home and town libraries meet all requirements. Few collections, however well selected, supply much material prior to Irving. And even when reference reading is practicable, the desirability of a text for classroom study is still obvious. With this by way of explanation, not apology, the editors are content. Thanks are gratefully extended to all who have helped to make the book - to the boys and girls whose frank expressions of interest or boredom have shown us what appeals to younger readers; to the fellow teachers who have advised from their experience; to the publishers who have made adequate selection possible. If there are any lingering regrets, and what compiler ever saw in his book a true compendium of his desires, it is that the number of selections could not be more generous. Excerpt from American Literature Through Illustrative Readings This volume is intended as a handbook for high-school students of American literature. The purpose of the book is to give a fair view of what has been done and is still being done in the domain of American letters, and to stimulate, through the illustrations, further reading in and appreciation of American authors. The work is by no means exhaustive, but it is believed that it is representative of the periods and the personalities in our literary development. A relatively large space has been given to living writers and recent literary activities because the high-school pupils interest is emphatically in the present-day author and his reading is chiefly from contemporary productions. Hence he needs direction and guidance in this field as much as anywhere. Moreover, through the study of the good modern writer, he may be drawn to the classic when he sees the dependence of the new writer on the old, when he realizes the modern authors appreciation of the great and the good in the achievement of earlier men. All work of a critical nature has been purposely omitted as outside the sphere of interest and comprehension of the high-school student. Even in the bibliographies no mention is made of books which are works of appraisal mainly. Further readings in the particular authors are indicated and reference is made to works which shed light on the period and on the environment of the author, for the sake of atmosphere and background.
