This collection of essays focuses on works by prominent poets and writers of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular focus on (post)Romantics and modernists. These authors belong to essentially different socio-historical, linguistic, cultural and geopolitical contexts, and the studies examine some of their emblematic texts from a comparative critical perspective. Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire, William Butler Yeats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Emily Dickinson and Marina Tsvetaeva are some of the paired authors, who, due to the originality of their thought and work, have come to be considered amongst the most significant literary figures of their contemporary world. The volume offers an original and insightful reading of the literary text as a powerful means of both representing and shaping the inherent dialogism of different cultures. As such, it transcends, in an imaginative way, the national, racial and cultural boundaries of human existence.

As the title suggests, this six-chapter book responds to a question which, in Western culture, goes back to Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian, namely, What should rhetoric teachers ask their students to read? Primarily historical, the first two chapters trace conflicting answers to the question above, focusing on two constructive results of the debate: the re-invention of rhetoric and writing as a discipline, a coherent and growing body of knowledge; and, as a result, the emergence of independent departments of writing, free from departments of English, free, therefore, to develop their own curriculum and to manage their own budgets. Additionally, the second chapter examines two destructive consequences of this debate: the ban of literature from writing courses, where students might profitably study both; and, as a result, the often painful departmental splits, which not only separate former colleagues but also cramp the pedagogy of those trained to teach both writing and literature. More than a survey of key publications, this chapter encourages readers to honor the discipline of rhetoric but to make a place for literature on their composition syllabi. The next four chapters provide pedagogical support for these chief claims: that literature can and should be taught in writing courses, and that such readings need not distract students from the primary text, their own writing. On the contrary, these readings motivate serious writing when students feel invited into a conversation on issues that touch their lives. These pedagogical chapters, then, move entering professionals from the theoretical debate to the application of theory; therefore, the book would serve well professors of courses in composition theory, particularly those who enjoy ‘teaching the conflicts’ and preparing their graduate students to design assignments and courses that apply theories of learning, reading, and composing.

Stuart Hall Conjunctural Analysis And Cultural Criminology written by Tony Jefferson and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-30 with Social Science categories.

This book discusses Stuart Hall's unique contribution to criminology. It suggests that this is captured best in Hall’s commitment to understanding a given historical moment, or conjuncture, in its full complexity, and his continuous deployment of an appropriate methodology, conjunctural analysis, to do so. This provides a running thread linking Hall’s early work on youth subcultures, the media, the state and hegemony to his later work on racial identities, racism and the politics of difference. This is contrasted with more theoretically-driven work in cultural criminology. Its failure to adopt a conjunctural approach constitutes, for the author, something of a missed moment. To demonstrate the continuing relevance of this form of analysis, the book provides a conjunctural analysis of Brexit, including its psychosocial dimension and concludes with a brief analysis of Trump’s failure to get re-elected. The book is intended for students of criminology and cultural studies.
