Excerpt from Politics in the United States: Readings in Political Parties and Pressure Groups During the several years that I have taught courses in political parties and politics, I have been impressed with the need for a book of readings composed largely of timely, significant, and interesting articles written by active political participants, experienced political observers, and prominent scholars. It has been my belief that such a book would provide a highly realistic portrayal of this vital and dynamic field, would perhaps give the reader a vicarious experience in politics, and would stimulate greater interest and participation in politics. This volume is designed to meet that need. It may be used either as a supplement to any of the standard texts on political parties or as the principal text. The book should also prove of value and interest to the general reader who wishes information about the functioning of political parties and pressure groups and the role of public Opinion in our representative democracy. The selections in this book have been gathered from a variety of sources. A number of articles have been written by individuals with wide experience in various phases of politics. For example, a famous governor who has twice been his party's nominee for the presidency presents a penetrating analysis of our two - party system; a public-relations expert explains his role in electing to the United States Senate a man who was virtually unknown; a political boss of national reputation describes the way he controlled and directed his party organization; and a United States Senator sets forth the findings of a Senate committee on ethics in government. Other readings have been extracted from publications of our two major political parties and from government documents -including reports of congressional committees. Officials of the leading farm, business, and labor organizations have generously prepared for this volume articles describing their organizations or explaining their interest in politics. A large number of the selections have been written by leading scholars or journal ists who, through education or experience or both, have become specialists in some phase of politics. Excerpt from History of Political Parties in the State of New-York: From the Acknowledgement of the Independence of the United States to the Close of the Presidential Election in Eighteen Hundred Forty-Four In a Democratic form of Government, Where the people are themselves the sovereign rulers, it is nat urally to be expected, that a deep and pervading in terest in the movements of Statesmen and Politicians, Will be at all times manifested. The character and conduct of those individuals who are honored with the public confidence, are subjects in relation to which there always exists a desire to be enlightened. The nature of our Institutions is such, that every man becomes, to a certain extent, a politician; and no one can be exalted so high, as not to feel the popular scrutiny, or yield to the popular will. It is for these reasons, that the History of Political Parties becomes so full of importance to the intelligent and reflecting voter. Excerpt from The American Party System: An Introduction to the Study of Political Parties in the United States This volume is an analysis of the American party system, an account of the structure, processes and significance of the political party, designed to show as clearly as possible within compact limits what the function of the political party is in the community. My purpose is to make this, as far as possible, an objective study of the organization and behavior of our political parties. It is hoped that this volume may serve as an introduction to students and others who wish to find a concise account of the party system; and also that it may serve to stimulate more intensive study of the important features and processes of the party. From time to time in the course of this discussion significant fields of inquiry have been indicated where it is believed that research would bear rich fruit. In the light of broader statistical information than we now have and with the aid of a thorough-going social and political psychology than we now have, it will be possible in the future to make much more exhaustive and conclusive studies of political parties than we are able to do at present. The objective, detailed study of political behavior will unquestionably enlarge our knowledge of the system of social and political control under which we now operate. But such inquiries will call for funds and personnel not now available to me. This volume is based upon some twenty-five years of observation and study of the party system in the United States. Party Politics In America written by Marjorie Randon Hershey and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-17 with Political Science categories.

The seventeenth edition of Party Politics in America continues the comprehensive and authoritative coverage of political parties for which it is known while expanding and updating the treatment of key related topics including interest groups and elections. Marjorie Hershey builds on the book’s three-pronged coverage of party organization, party in the electorate, and party in government and integrates contemporary examples—such as campaign finance reform, party polarization, and social media—to bring to life the fascinating story of how parties shape our political system. New to the 17th Edition Fully updated through the 2016 election, including changes in virtually all of the boxed materials, the chapter openings, and the data presented. Explores increasing partisan hostility, the status of voter ID laws and other efforts to affect voter turnout, young voters' attitudes and participation, and the role of big givers such as the energy billionaire Koch brothers in the 2016 campaigns. Critically examines the idea that Super PACs are replacing, or can replace, the party organizations in running campaigns. New and expanded online Instructor's Resources, including author-written test banks, essay questions, relevant websites with correlated sample assignments, the book’s appendix, and links to a collection of course syllabi.

Recent U.S. elections have defied nationwide majority preference at the White House, Senate, and House levels. This work of interdisciplinary scholarship explains how “winner-take-all” and single-member district elections make this happen, and what can be done to repair the system. Proposed reforms include the National Popular Vote interstate compact (presidential elections); eliminating the Senate filibuster; and proportional representation using Ranked Choice Voting for House, state, and local elections.

'An eerily prescient foreshadowing of current affairs' Guardian 'Not only Lewis's most important book but one of the most important books ever produced in the United States' New Yorker A vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fearmongering demagogue runs for President of the United States - and wins. Sinclair Lewis's chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, 'Professional Common Man', who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessup can't believe it will last - but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here.

This compilation is an effort historically to trace the systrematic and ordered changes in Constitutional thinking, by judicious selection of the key operative phrases and concepts imbeded in hundreds of cases of varying importance, more clearly to illustrate the evolutionary process by which the Constitution has come to have its current form and meaning. The effort has been to extract from the hundreds of case decisions and dissents, those immutable words and phrases which capture the essence of the points at issue, in the Justice's own words just as they wrote them in the white heat of judicial argument. Moreover, the effort has been to trace the chain of precedents for cases and concepts, more clearly to show how the jigs and jogs fo decisions have altered the Constitution as applied. Whether or not agreed to (being the subject of strong controversy between the members of the Court itself), that process is one of organic, evolutionary growth, reflecting the chaging times, concepts, legal theory, and political ideas in the American experience. In a larger perspective, the Constitution has been the greatest American export to a world grappling with the desire to emulate the American experience of liberty under law. The volume will be of interest to students of the subject, as well as the legal profession; it is the product of a lifetime spent in the study and teaching of the Great Document.

The Emerging Republican Majority written by Kevin P. Phillips and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-23 with Political Science categories.

One of the most important and controversial books in modern American politics, The Emerging Republican Majority (1969) explained how Richard Nixon won the White House in 1968—and why the Republicans would go on to dominate presidential politics for the next quarter century. Rightly or wrongly, the book has widely been seen as a blueprint for how Republicans, using the so-called Southern Strategy, could build a durable winning coalition in presidential elections. Certainly, Nixon's election marked the end of a "New Deal Democratic hegemony" and the beginning of a conservative realignment encompassing historically Democratic voters from the South and the Florida-to-California "Sun Belt," in the book’s enduring coinage. In accounting for that shift, Kevin Phillips showed how two decades and more of social and political changes had created enormous opportunities for a resurgent conservative Republican Party. For this new edition, Phillips has written a preface describing his view of the book, its reception, and how its analysis was borne out in subsequent elections. A work whose legacy and influence are still fiercely debated, The Emerging Republican Majority is essential reading for anyone interested in American politics or history.
