This book presents an overview of the guidelines and strategies for transitioning an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment into a real-time constrained environment. Such guidelines and strategies are scattered in the literature of various disciplines including image processing, computer engineering, and software engineering, and thus have not previously appeared in one place. By bringing these strategies into one place, the book is intended to serve the greater community of researchers, practicing engineers, industrial professionals, who are interested in taking an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment to an actual real-time implementation on a resource constrained hardware platform. These strategies consist of algorithm simplifications, hardware architectures, and software methods. Throughout the book, carefully selected representative examples from the literature are presented to illustrate the discussed concepts. After reading the book, the readers are exposed to a wide variety of techniques and tools, which they can then employ to design a real-time image or video processing system.

Blind Signal Separation (BSS) deals with recovering (filtered versions of) source signals from an observed mixture thereof. The term `blind' relates to the fact that there are no reference signals for the source signals and also that the mixing system is unknown. This book presents a new method for blind signal separation, which is developed to work on microphone signals. Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) is a well-known technique to suppress the echo that a microphone picks up from a loudspeaker in the same room. Such acoustic feedback occurs for example in hands-free telephony and can lead to a perceived loud tone. For an application such as a voice-controlled television, a stereo AEC is required to suppress the contribution of the stereo loudspeaker setup. A generalized AEC is presented that is suited for multi-channel operation. New algorithms for Blind Signal Separation and multi-channel Acoustic Echo Cancellation are presented. A background is given in array signal processing methods, adaptive filter theory, and fast filtering in the frequency domain. The included CD-ROM can be played using any compact disc player to play the simulation results that are described in the text. When inserted into a computer, it furthermore gives Matlab implementations of the new algorithms along with audio data with which to experiment. This makes the book suited to researchers, engineers, and university students, who want to get acquainted with these emerging fields.

In photon science more and more data are taken. It is not possible anymore to store and process all data offline. In this book, we explore strategies for handling this large amount of data. A neural network as well as techniques from image processing are used to efficiently categorize and select useful data. We also indicate why many sophisticated algorithms cannot be used in this context. In addition, a prototype for data selection is presented, discussed, and benchmarked.

Digital image processing, or signal processing, has been utilized for defense, security, and healthcare applications, including the detection and tracking of minuscule targets, missile guidance, vehicle navigation, broad area surveillance, and automatic or assisted target recognition. In military and security applications, image processing strategies attempt to minimize the burden of human analysts to accommodate the increasing volume of picture data acquired. Other objectives include the creation of algorithms and methods that facilitate the development of autonomous systems capable of making judgments and taking actions based on all sensor inputs. Further research into signal and image processing may help improve current techniques in these sectors. Signal and Image Processing Techniques for Defense, Security, and Healthcare explores the application of advanced signal and image processing technologies across these three critical sectors. It examines how these techniques are used to analyze and interpret data in defense, security, and healthcare contexts. This book covers topics such as healthcare technology, computer algorithms, and object detection, and is a useful resource for computer engineers, medical professionals, security workers, business owners, academicians, scientists, and researchers.

Real-Time Video Content for Virtual Production & Live Entertainment looks at the evolution of current software and hardware, how these tools are used, and how to plan for productions dependent on real-time content. From rock concerts to theatre, live television broadcast to film production, art installations to immersive experiences, the book outlines the various applications of real-time video content – the intersection of gaming and performance that is revolutionizing how films are made and how video content is created for screens. Rather than render out a fixed video file, new tools allow for interactive video content that responds to audience activity, camera position, and performer action in real time. Combining software renderers with environmental information, video content is generated nearly instantaneously to simulate depth, creating a new world of Virtual Production. This book provides an overview of the current software and hardware used to create real-time content while also reviewing the various external technologies the real-time content is dependent upon. Case studies from industry experts appear in each chapter to reinforce the tools described, establish industry practice, and provide insight on a complex and rapidly growing discipline. Real-Time Video Content for Virtual Production & Live Entertainment prepares students and practitioners for a future working with real-time technologies and informs current entertainment technology professionals how to rethink about their old roles using these new tools. The book includes access to a companion website featuring web-based and video resources that expand on topics covered in the text. Each chapter has a unique page that points to example material, video presentations, and professional studies on chapter topics. You can visit the companion website at rtv-book.com.
