John Oman (1860–1939) was one of the most original and profound theologian-philosophers of his generation. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, Houston traces the influences on Oman’s Orkney childhood and his student days in Edinburgh University and the Divinity Hall of the United Presbyterian Church. She reviews Oman’s subsequent publications during his ministry in Alnwick, and his influential career as professor of systematic theology and college principal at Westminster College, Cambridge. Houston describes the extent to which Oman’s view of the world was challenged and affirmed by his experience of the First World War. Oman’s theological and religious perspectives, summarized as “reverence, freedom, and sincerity,” are rooted in the concerns of daily life. Reason is an undeniable human faculty that defines humanness and points to a rational universe. This in turn points to the principle of reason, or the logos developed by Heraclitus and other Greek philosophers, and later by the Apostle John. Reason and its corollaries emerge like aspects of language and complement each other like speaking and listening. Indeed, mutual communication works because of reciprocity, which is a root form of intelligibility. This seems to be the structure or order which is best explained by a rational, divine Mind that exists eternally in reciprocal complementarity. This, then, is an exploration of the role of the Logos principle in the human experience and condition we often refer to as Reality. It is an attempt to answer these four questions and others related to it: Why do reason and logic work? Why do we believe and trust in them? Why do we expect things to make sense? Why does anything make sense at all?

This book offers an inspiring and naïve view on language and reasoning. It presents a new approach to ordinary reasoning that follows the author’s former work on fuzzy logic. Starting from a pragmatic scientific view on meaning as a quantity, and the common sense reasoning from a primitive notion of inference, which is shared by both laypeople and experts, the book shows how this can evolve, through the addition of more and more suppositions, into various formal and specialized modes of precise, imprecise, and approximate reasoning. The logos are intended here as a synonym for rationality, which is usually shown by the processes of questioning, guessing, telling, and computing. Written in a discursive style and without too many technicalities, the book presents a number of reflections on the study of reasoning, together with a new perspective on fuzzy logic and Zadeh’s “computing with words” grounded in both language and reasoning.
