Looking through subconsciously, there is nothing to see because there is no other way of looking through the subconscious as it is but a state of mind in which our minds escape to. It's even a myth just thinking there is a way out of all this. For that is telling us there is a way through to seeing what our soul actually looks like. Or so we claim to, even more by then is it to identify which of our ways can claim it is ours. All we know is that we are scared by it, that's why we are inspired to finding out the truth. However, should we ever bleed out first then let it be known we bore ourselves witness to creating something we have never seen. Then by recording it, we would make it right, some way. Just don't forget to write it all down before you die, eh!

This isn't just a book of prose and poetry but a beautiful streetwise and lyrical telling of a life in pursuit of truth, sex, love, youth-lost and experience. With an alternating rhythm of long free-flowing sentences and short, minimalist statements, Let It Bleed is an original urban street-hymn that hearkens to writers of yesterday like Sylvia Plath and also the more modern rock and roll writings of Patti Smith, but always and forever original and unique.

Today the classics of the western canon, written by the proverbial "dead white men," are cannon fodder in the culture wars. But in the 1950s and 1960s, they were a pop culture phenomenon. The Great Books of Western Civilization, fifty-four volumes chosen by intellectuals at the University of Chicago, began as an educational movement, and evolved into a successful marketing idea. Why did a million American households buy books by Hippocrates and Nicomachus from door-to-door salesmen? And how and why did the great books fall out of fashion? In A Great Idea at the Time Alex Beam explores the Great Books mania, in an entertaining and strangely poignant portrait of American popular culture on the threshold of the television age. Populated with memorable characters, A Great Idea at the Time will leave readers asking themselves: Have I read Lucretius's De Rerum Natura lately? If not, why not?

J.J. Van Loghem Previously to this symposium, five others have taken place in Groningen. The first one in 1976. This yearly scientific happening has continued. It has greatly stimulated the in terest in blood transfusion and all allied disciplines in our country. It is clear that these meetings are organized not only by a good scientist, but at the same time by a gifted or ganizer who, as director of the Red Cross Blood Bank Gro ningen-Drenthe, has shown that the heavy load of daily routine work can very well be combined with a large amount of experimental and clinical research in blood component therapy, coagulation disorders, blood group genetics and serology, the latter in cooperation with the Blood Group laboratory of the University Hospital Groningen under the directorship of Dr. Van Dijk. All these activities show how much a well-organized blood bank can contribute to a national blood transfusion orga nization.

Life and our thoughts, I believe, are split into many segments. Putting them together is what creates the bigger picture. Seeing this masterpiece is hard enough. Describing it is what I believe is what we as writers try to do. Heres a vague attempt.

What did British people in the late eighteenth century think and feel about their relationship to nonhuman animals? This book shows how an appreciation of human-animal similarity and a literature of compassion for animals developed in the same years during which radical thinkers were first basing political demands on the concept of natural and universal human rights. Some people began to conceptualise animal rights as an extension of the rights of man and woman. But because oppressed people had to insist on their own separation from animals in order to claim the right to a full share in human privileges, the relationship between human and animal rights was fraught and complex. This book examines that relationship in chapters covering the abolition movement, early feminism, and the political reform movement. Donkeys, pigs, apes and many other literary animals became central metaphors within political discourse, fought over in the struggle for rights and freedoms; while at the same time more and more writers became interested in exploring the experiences of animals themselves. We learn how children's writers pioneered narrative techniques for representing animal subjectivity, and how the anti-cruelty campaign of the early 1800s drew on the legacy of 1790s radicalism. Coleridge, Wordsworth, Clare, Southey, Blake, Wollstonecraft, Equiano, Dorothy Kilner, Thomas Spence, Mary Hays, Ignatius Sancho, Anna Letitia Barbauld, John Oswald, John Lawrence, and Thomas Erskine are just a few of the writers considered. Along with other canonical and non-canonical writers of many disciplines, they placed nonhuman animals at the heart of British literature in the age of the French Revolution.

It was the last of the ebbing days, the brink of the new season. It was the murky hours, the clove between sunset and sunrise. It was a tall tree with deep roots and it had been bleeding for a long while. As summer falls into autumn, Hollie Starling is hit by the heart-stopping news that her father has died by suicide. Thrust into a state of 'grief on hard mode', Hollie feels underserved by current attitudes toward grief and so seeks another way through the dark. Following her first year without her father, Hollie embraces her lifelong interest in folklore and turns to the healing power of nature, the changing seasons and the rituals of ancient communities. The Bleeding Tree is an unflinching year-zero guidebook to grief that shows us that by looking back to past traditions of bereavement we can all find our own way forward. 'Starling's account of family life is riveting and narrated with grace and honesty, counterpointing the personal with the mythic.' - Irish Times
