Winner of the 2014 Mexican Book Prize In the middle of the twentieth century, a growing tide of student activism in Mexico reached a level that could not be ignored, culminating with the 1968 movement. This book traces the rise, growth, and consequences of Mexico's "student problem" during the long sixties (1956-1971). Historian Jaime M. Pensado closely analyzes student politics and youth culture during this period, as well as reactions to them on the part of competing actors. Examining student unrest and youthful militancy in the forms of sponsored student thuggery (porrismo), provocation, clientelism (charrismo estudiantil), and fun (relajo), Pensado offers insight into larger issues of state formation and resistance. He draws particular attention to the shifting notions of youth in Cold War Mexico and details the impact of the Cuban Revolution in Mexico's universities. In doing so, Pensado demonstrates the ways in which deviating authorities—inside and outside the government—responded differently to student unrest, and provides a compelling explanation for the longevity of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional.

The Rebel is the memoir of a revolutionary woman, Leonor Villegas de Magnon (1876-1955), who was a fiery critic of dictator Porfirio Diaz and a conspirator and participant in the Mexican Revolution. Villegas de Magnon rebelled against the ideals of her aristocratic class and against the traditional role of women in her society. In 1910 Villegas moved from Mexico to Laredo, Texas, where she continued supporting the revolution as a member of the Junta Revolucionaria (Revolutionary Council) and as a fiery editorialist in Laredo newspapers. In 1913, she founded La Cruz Blanca (The White Cross) to serve as a corps of nurses for the revolutionary forces active from the border region to Mexico City. Many women like Villegas de Magnon from both sides of the border risked their lives and left their families to support the revolution. Years later, however, when their participation had still been unacknowledged and was running the risk of being forgotten, Villegas de Magnon decided to write her personal account of this history. The Rebel covers the period from 1876 through 1920, documenting the heroic actions of the women. Written in the third person with a romantic fervor, the narrative interweaves autobiography with the story of La Cruz Blanca. Until now Villegas de Magnon's written contributions have remained virtually unrecognized - peripheral to both Mexico and the United States, fragmented by a border. Not only does her work attest to the vitality, strength and involvement of women in sociopolitical concerns, but it also stands as one of the very few written documents that consciously challenges stereotyped misconceptions of Mexican Americans held by both Mexicans and Anglo-Americans.

Gringo Rebel, first published in 1960, is the account of Swedish-born adventurer Ivor Thord-Gray of his time in 1913-1914 in revolutionary Mexico. Thord-Gray first served as an artillery officer in Francisco 'Pancho' Villa’s forces, and later served as a cavalry officer in Carranza’s army under Obregón. He formed close bonds with his Yaqui and Tarahumara scouts, and later prepared a Tarahumara-English Dictionary, and other books about Mexican archaeology. Gringo Rebel offers a first-hand look at the poorly understood conflict in Mexico between the wealthy ruling class and the large majority of land-less peasants living in slave-like conditions, as well as insights into rebel leaders such as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata (leader of the 'Zapatistas'). Having run away from cruel treatment, Luis by chance came to fight with the rebel armies in the 1910 Mexican Revolution, received the nickname of "El Coyote" for his cunning, and was wounded in combat. Upon being given a discharge and a twenty-dollar bill, he walked across the border to become an American. His story concludes, after an episode of amorous misadventures in a missionary school, with the young hero preparing to marry his true love and solemnly taking the oath of U.S. citizenship, at "the beginning of a new tomorrow."

Behind every pronunciamiento, a formal list of grievances designed to spark political change in nineteenth-century Mexico, was a disgruntled individual, rebel, or pronunciado. Initially a role undertaken by soldiers, a pronunciado rallied military communities to petition for local, regional, and even national interests. As the popularity of these petitions grew, however, they evolved from a military-led practice to one endorsed and engaged by civilians, priests, indigenous communities, and politicians. The second in a series of books exploring the phenomenon of the pronunciamiento, this volume examines case studies of individual and collective pronunciados in regions across Mexico. Top scholars examine the motivations of individual pronunciados and the reasons they succeeded or failed; why garrisons, town councils, and communities adopted the pronunciamiento as a political tool and form of representation and used it to address local and national grievances; and whether institutions upheld corporate aims in endorsing, supporting, or launching pronunciamientos. The essays provide a better understanding of the rebel leaders behind these public acts of defiance and reveal how an insurrectionary repertoire became part of a national political culture.

This volume presents the life and activities of Pascual Orozco (1882-1915), a Mexican revolutionary leader who, after the triumph of the Mexican Revolution, rose up against Francisco Madero and recognized the coup d'état led by Victoriano Huerta and the government it imposed. The author's primary aim is to analyze General Orozco's revolutionary career and to trace the course of the 1910 revolution in Chihuahua. Orozco's contributions to the conception and growth of the revolutionary phenomenon were multiple, but his chief importance is found in his bringing together of the masses in northern Mexico -- the people who would comprise the rank and file of the revolutionary army and eventually implement its success -- and in the military leadership which he provided during the protracted series of campaigns.
