The theme of violence is natural to the history of Latin America and, therefore, it is endless in any of its multiple material and symbolic manifestations, from its colonial origins to the present. At a continental level, the praxis and discourse of violence can be traced back to the spread of the colonising voracity that conditioned Latin America within the cultural development of the West, followed by the most recent and subtle forms assumed by state violence, including the instances of imposition of cultural and economic models that, at the different times, radically impacted the Creole and vernacular cultures. Thus, Latin America has historically suffered the consequences of a founding violence which condemned it to a peripheral position in relation to global systems which centres have spread in their corresponding areas of influence, the 'rationality' of their own cultural, political and economic replication. In this way, the social fabric resulting from the colonialist matrix has recorded from the beginning the indelible traces of violence that are displayed both at racial and economic levels, both in terms of gender policies and in terms of the geocultural distribution of power, at all levels. The 'painful Spanish-American republics' of which Martí spoke, have since fought against the normalisation of the violence of exclusion and authoritarianism, the internal misery and imperialistic greed, the cultural colonisation and political actions always condoned by a legitimising rhetoric that the ruling classes wielded in every instance to perpetuate their power. This volume, which compiles papers that were presented and discussed at the Second International Conference on Latin American Cultural Studies to be held at the University of Pittsburgh in March 2000, has as its main focus a specific articulation around the topic of contemporary violence: it analyses the intersections and specific ways in which violence presents itself in the urban centres of Latin America as its main scenario, and the modalities from which the phenomenon of violence is recorded and represented by the mass media, as well as popular culture, art, literature and other forms of literary discourse and 'high culture'.

The first essays in this volume locate Latin America within the postmodernism debate by addressing both its position in the theory of the postmodern and the peripheral existence of the continent in light of the globalizing practices of the contemporary world. The Art of Transition addresses the problems defined by writers and artists during the postdictatorship years in Argentina and Chile, years in which both countries aggressively adopted neoliberal market-driven economies. Delving into the conflicting efforts of intellectuals to name and speak to what is real, Francine Masiello interprets the culture of this period as an art of transition, referring to both the political transition to democracy and the formal strategies of wrestling with this change that are found in the aesthetic realm. Masiello views representation as both a political and artistic device, concerned with the tensions between truth and lies, experience and language, and intellectuals and the marginal subjects they study and claim to defend. This edited volume explores political violence and genocide in Latin America during the Cold War, examining this in light of the United States’ hegemonic position on the continent. Using case studies based on the regimes of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay, this book shows how U.S foreign policy – far from promoting long term political stability and democratic institutions – has actually undermined them. The first part of the book is an inquiry into the larger historical context in which the development of an unequal power relationship between the United States and Latin American and Caribbean nations evolved after the proliferation of the Monroe Doctrine. The region came to be seen as a contested terrain in the East-West conflict of the Cold War, and a new US-inspired ideology, the ‘National Security Doctrine’, was used to justify military operations and the hunting down of individuals and groups labelled as ‘communists’. Following on from this historical context, the book then provides an analysis of the mechanisms of state and genocidal violence is offered, demonstrating how in order to get to know the internal enemy, national armies relied on US intelligence training and economic aid to carry out their surveillance campaigns. This book will be of interest to students of Latin American politics, US foreign policy, human rights and terrorism and political violence in general. Marcia Esparza is an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Henry R.
