Marine mammals have been valued for millennia for their cultural significance and more often, their exploitative resource value. Many large whale species remain imperilled or are only recently returning from the brink of extinction. In contrast, recent conservation measures have allowed for the successful rebound and recovery of many cetaceans and pinniped species, some to the point of perceived “overabundance”, whether referring to 1,200 Hawaiian monk seals or 7 million harp seals. In addition to their continued intrinsic value alive and thriving, today we also appreciate the value of marine mammal species to ecosystem health. Yet, as we grapple with a lack of historical baselines, and uncertain ecological and social carrying capacities, several conflicts are emerging at the growing interface between humans and marine mammals. These conflicts include ship strikes, depredation, bycatch, impacts of ecotourism, competition for resources, changing cultural values and political challenges to marine mammal conservation. Despite the emergence of theory and application of human dimensions of wildlife in the terrestrial realm, the rebound of marine mammals and how we address these conflicts in the coastal and ocean environment are often overlooked when discussing human-wildlife conflict issues and solutions. This Research Topic aims to increase awareness of these issues to advance the discussion on how we can address these challenges in ocean systems. Conflicts with rebounding populations of marine mammals have emerged across diverse ecological, sociological, economic, and political contexts. Conflicts often arise from assessing how marine mammals fit into the human world based on the baseline understanding of one's own personal experiences or specific community contexts, rather than broader and complex ecosystems understanding or historical context. How do we address these emerging, complex socio-ecological problems related to marine mammals? Who defines the problems, and how are the problems defined? How do we consider often-opposing values and interests in the development of solutions, and how do we engage diverse stakeholders in decision-making processes that shape how we will manage and coexist with marine mammal populations for generations to come? How can different disciplines help build the knowledge foundation and strategies necessary to address these challenges?

Marine Environmental Biology and Conservation provides an introduction to the environmental and anthropogenic threats facing the world’s oceans, and outlines the steps that can and should be taken to protect these vital habitats. It begins with a brief overview of the essentials of marine biology and oceanography necessary to understand the conservation material. The book then moves through the different habitats in the marine environment, such as coastal ecosystems, the open ocean, and the deep sea, exploring the organisms that live there, and what conservation dangers and solutions affect these areas.

Marine Mammal Conservation And The Law Of The Sea written by Cameron S. G. Jefferies and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-12 with Law categories.
Marine mammal conservation remains a hot-button international environmental issue, but progress towards addressing key conservation and management issues within existing governance structures-most notably the International Whaling Commission-has stalled. Cameron Jefferies offers a fresh look at the future of international marine mammal management in a way that advances the ongoing dialog surrounding UNCLOS implementation and effective living marine resource management, while employing the comprehensive rational decision-making model as a theoretical framework. Marine Mammal Conservation and the Law of the Sea lays out and critiques the marine mammal regulatory landscape. It introduces the rational conservation model, and details the modern threats to marine mammals, including climate change, by-catch, environmental pollution, ship strikes. Next, it discusses options for reform under UNCLOS and existing treaties, and finally introduces a new holistic treaty regime based on the rational conversation model, based in part on the UN Fish Stocks Agreement. This book will appeal to scholars, practitioners, and policymakers across public international law, international relations, political science, and environmental policy in the academic, governmental, IO, and NGO spheres.

This book provides a thorough, up-to-date examination of conservation biology and the many supporting disciplines that comprise conservation science. In this, the Third Edition of the highly successful Conservation Biology: Foundations, Concepts, Applications, the authors address their interdisciplinary topic as it must now be practiced and perceived in the modern world. Beginning with a concise review of the history of conservation, the authors go on to explore the interplay of conservation with genetics, demography, habitat and landscape, aquatic environments, and ecosystem management, and the relationship of all these disciplines to ethics, economics, law, and policy. An entirely new chapter, The Anthropocene: Conservation in a Human-Dominated Nature, breaks new ground in its exploration of how conservation can be practiced in anthropogenic biomes, novel ecosystems, and urban habitats. The Third Edition includes the popular Points of Engagement discussion questions used in earlier editions, and adds a new feature: Information Boxes, which briefly recap specific case histories described in the text. A concluding chapter offers insight into how to become a conservation professional, in both traditional and non-traditional roles. The authors, Fred Van Dyke and Rachel Lamb, draw on their expertise as field biologists, wildlife managers, consultants to government and industry, and scholars of environmental law, policy, and advocacy, as well as their many years of effective teaching experience. Informed by practical knowledge and acquired skills, the authors have created a work of exceptional clarity and readability which encompasses both systemic foundations as well as contemporary developments in the field. Conservation Biology: Foundations, Concepts, Applications will be of invaluable benefit to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to working conservation scientists and managers. This is an amazing resource for students, faculty, and practitioners both new and experienced to the field. Diane Debinski, PhD Unexcelled wisdom for living at home on Wonderland Earth, the planet with promise, destined for abundant life. Holmes Rolston, PhD Van Dyke and Lamb have maintained the original text’s emphasis on connecting classical ecological and environmental work with updated modern applications and lucid examples. But more importantly, the third edition contains much new material on the human side of conservation, including expanded treatments of policy, economics, and climate change. Tim Van Deelen, PhD Fred Van Dyke and Rachel Lamb break new ground in both the breadth and depth of their review and analysis of this crucially important and rapidly changing field. Any student or other reader wishing to have a comprehensive overview and understanding of the complexities of conservation biology need look no further – this book is your starting point! Simon N. Stuart, PhD Anyone who teaches, talks or writes and works on Conservation Biology, needs this latest edition of Conservation Biology (Foundations, Concepts, Applications, 3rd edition) by Fred Van Dyke and Rachel L. Lamb. This will be useful to both beginners and experts as well. The authors included almost all important issues in relation to conservation biology. This is really an outstanding book.
