Recalling the Indies reflects on a 'migrant story', the stories of the journeys of the Indisch Dutch from the days of their childhood in the Dutch East Indies, through their grim experiences of war-time imprisonment and the Indonesian revolution, to their eventual settlement in Australia. Almost half a million people of Dutch and Dutch-Indonesian descent were forced to leave their homeland when Indonesia claimed its independence from the Netherlands. Where would they go? To the Netherlands, whose language they spoke but from whose culture and climate they had become alienated? This was their first landing but here they were met with hostility. On to Australia? But there 'people of colour' were confronted by the infamous White Australia Policy. Eventually approximately 10,000 Indisch Dutch people settled in Australia; many more settled in North America, others in New Zealand. In this volume Joost Cote and Loes Westerbeek have brought together a broad range of contributors to tell the story of the Australian Indisch Dutch for the first time. Contributions range from the personal stories of the migrants themselves, to essays by Dutch and Australian scholars working in the field.

It is an important counterpart to work on France, Britain, and Portugal.”—Andrea Smith, Lafayette College

This book examines Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region during the interwar period. Until now, Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region have been neglected by scholars of Australian and Asian sports history, and the broader field of Australia’s Asian context. Concentrating on the period of the 1920s and 1930s – when sporting relationships between Australia and a number of Asian nations emerged in a variety of sports – this book demonstrates the depth of these previously under-examined connections. The book challenges, and complicates, the broader historiography of Australia’s Asian context – a historiography that has been strongly influenced by the White Australia Policy and the Pacific War. Why, for example, did white Australia so warmly welcome visiting Japanese sportsmen at a time when the Pacific region appeared to be inexorably sliding into a war that was informed by racial antagonisms? This book examines sporting relations between Australia and seven Asian countries (China, Japan, India, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines, Malaya and Singapore) and a range of sports including rugby, football, swimming, hockey, boxing, cricket and tennis. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

William Faulkner remains a historian's writer. A distinguished roster of historians have referenced Faulkner in their published work. They are drawn to him as a fellow historian, a shaper of narrative reflections on the meaning of the past; as a historiographer, a theorist, and dramatist of the fraught enterprise of doing history; and as a historical figure himself, especially following his mid-century emergence as a public intellectual after winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. This volume brings together historians and literary scholars to explore the many facets of Faulkner's relationship to history: the historical contexts of his novels and stories; his explorations of the historiographic imagination; his engagement with historical figures from both the regional and national past; his influence on professional historians; his pursuit of alternate modes of temporal awareness; and the histories of print culture that shaped the production, reception, and criticism of Faulkner's work. Contributors draw on the history of development in the Mississippi Valley, the construction of Confederate memory, the history and curriculum of Harvard University, twentieth-century debates over police brutality and temperance reform, the history of modern childhood, and the literary histories of anti-slavery writing and pulp fiction to illuminate Faulkner's work. Others in the collection explore the meaning of Faulkner's fiction for such professional historians as C. Vann Woodward and Albert Bushnell Hart. In these ways and more, Faulkner and History offers fresh insights into one of the most persistent and long-recognized elements of the Mississippian's artistic vision.

The celebrations of the first 400 years of relations between The Commonwealth of Australia and The Kingdom of The Netherlands mark a very special and important event for both countries. The shared relationship between the two countries was first established in 1606, when the Dutch vessel Duyfken mapped part of the coast near present day Weipa, Cape York Peninsula, of the continent that would, in time, become known as Australia. This event led to further encounters between early maritime pioneers; and traces of early Dutch influence are still found in such Australian place names as Tasmania and Cape Leeuwin. Over time, subsequent global events forged closer links between the two countries: as part of the post-war migration from a war-ravaged Europe to the population-hungry Australia, almost 170,000 Dutch nationals arrived 'down under'. It was this migration from Europe in the 1950s that allowed the Australian economy to move forward into more prosperous times. Today, there are some 270,000 Australian residents who were either born in the Netherlands, or who claim Dutch ancestry. The Dutch Down Under 1606-2006 provides illuminating commentary, from 23 contributing authors, on the history of these relationships and on the socio-economic and cultural impact of the migration on both Dutch residents in Australia, and their families in the Netherlands.
