El presente volumen introduce al lector español en un tema de particular relevancia en la historia contemporánea: la reforma agraria italiana de 1950. Creemos que, tras los años transcurridos desde aquella fecha y desde el nacimiento de Italia como Estado unitario (1861), se puede reconsiderar esta experiencia a la luz de las aportaciones historiográficas más recientes. No es nuestra intención ofrecer una interpretación metahistórica de la reforma agraria italiana, es decir, encontrar en este episodio un modelo exportable a los países pobres con conflictos sobre la propiedad de la tierra y con demandas de reducción de la desigualdad fundiaria. Somos conscientes de que este acontecimiento tiene un valor histórico limitado, pues ha interesado solo a determinadas zonas de Italia y responde a una fase de la historia económica y social en gran parte concluida e irrepetible. No obstante, la transformación de la estructura fundiaria en Italia, por los modos, los tiempos y el contexto de la posguerra, tiene un significado específico en la historia internacional de las reformas agrarias y de los procesos de democratización en el mundo contemporáneo, de modo que, todavía hoy, reviste un indudable interés.
