Bioinformatics, a field devoted to the interpretation and analysis of biological data using computational techniques, has evolved tremendously in recent years due to the explosive growth of biological information generated by the scientific community. Soft computing is a consortium of methodologies that work synergistically and provides, in one form or another, flexible information processing capabilities for handling real-life ambiguous situations. Several research articles dealing with the application of soft computing tools to bioinformatics have been published in the recent past; however, they are scattered in different journals, conference proceedings and technical reports, thus causing inconvenience to readers, students and researchers. This book, unique in its nature, is aimed at providing a treatise in a unified framework, with both theoretical and experimental results, describing the basic principles of soft computing and demonstrating the various ways in which they can be used for analyzing biological data in an efficient manner. Interesting research articles from eminent scientists around the world are brought together in a systematic way such that the reader will be able to understand the issues and challenges in this domain, the existing ways of tackling them, recent trends, and future directions. This book is the first of its kind to bring together two important research areas, soft computing and bioinformatics, in order to demonstrate how the tools and techniques in the former can be used for efficiently solving several problems in the latter. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Bioinformatics: Mining the Massive Data from High Throughput Genomics Experiments (160 KB). Contents: Overview: Bioinformatics: Mining the Massive Data from High Throughput Genomics Experiments (H Tang & S Kim); An Introduction to Soft Computing (A Konar & S Das); Biological Sequence and Structure Analysis: Reconstructing Phylogenies with Memetic Algorithms and Branch-and-Bound (J E Gallardo et al.); Classification of RNA Sequences with Support Vector Machines (J T L Wang & X Wu); Beyond String Algorithms: Protein Sequence Analysis Using Wavelet Transforms (A Krishnan & K-B Li); Filtering Protein Surface Motifs Using Negative Instances of Active Sites Candidates (N L Shrestha & T Ohkawa); Distill: A Machine Learning Approach to Ab Initio Protein Structure Prediction (G Pollastri et al.); In Silico Design of Ligands Using Properties of Target Active Sites (S Bandyopadhyay et al.); Gene Expression and Microarray Data Analysis: Inferring Regulations in a Genomic Network from Gene Expression Profiles (N Noman & H Iba); A Reliable Classification of Gene Clusters for Cancer Samples Using a Hybrid Multi-Objective Evolutionary Procedure (K Deb et al.); Feature Selection for Cancer Classification Using Ant Colony Optimization and Support Vector Machines (A Gupta et al.); Sophisticated Methods for Cancer Classification Using Microarray Data (S-B Cho & H-S Park); Multiobjective Evolutionary Approach to Fuzzy Clustering of Microarray Data (A Mukhopadhyay et al.). Readership: Graduate students and researchers in computer science, bioinformatics, computational and molecular biology, artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning, electrical engineering, system science; researchers in pharmaceutical industries.

The first edition of this book was greeted with broad interest from readers en gaged in various disciplines of biophysics. I received many stimulating and en couraging responses, however, some of the book's reviewers wanted to stress the fact that an extensive literature of network theory was not included or reported in the book. But the main aspect of the book is intended to be substantive rather than methodical: networks simply serve as a remedy for doing some first steps in analysing and modelling complex biological systems. For an advanced stage in the investigation of a particular system it may be appropriate to replace the pheno menological network method by more detailed techniques like statistical equations or computer simulations. According to this intention, the second edition of the book has been enlarged by further biological examples for network analysis, not by more network theory. There is a completely new section on a network model for photoreception. For this section I am obliged to J. Tiedge who did most of the detailed calculation and to my colleague Professor Stieve with whom we have had a very fruitful cooperation. Also I would like to mention that this work has been sponsored by the "Deutsche Forschungsgemei nschaft" i n the "Sonderforschungsberei ch 160". Recent results for excitable systems represented by feedback networks have also been included in the second edition, especially for limit cycle networks.

This book presents selected papers from the MENDEL conference that was held in Brno, Czech Republic in June 2017. Consisting of two parts, the book discusses recent advances in soft computing, including intelligent image processing: Part 1 addresses evolutionary computing, swarm intelligence, metaheuristics, and optimization; Part 2 then focuses on neural networks, machine learning, self-organization, fuzzy systems, and advanced statistics. The MENDEL conference was established in 1995 and it bears the name of the scientist and Augustinian priest Gregor J. Mendel, who discovered the famous Laws of Heredity. The main aim of the conference was to create a regular opportunity for students, academics and researchers to exchange their ideas and novel research methods.

As well as highlighting potentially useful applications for network analysis, this volume identifies new targets for mathematical research that promise to provide insights into network systems theory as well as facilitating the cross-fertilization of ideas between sectors. Focusing on financial, security and social aspects of networking, the volume adds to the growing body of evidence showing that network analysis has applications to transportation, communication, health, finance, and social policy more broadly. It provides powerful models for understanding the behavior of complex systems that, in turn, will impact numerous cutting-edge sectors in science and engineering, such as wireless communication, network security, distributed computing and social networking, financial analysis, and cyber warfare. The volume offers an insider’s view of cutting-edge research in network systems, including methodologies with immense potential for interdisciplinary application. The contributors have all presented material at a series of workshops organized on behalf of Canada’s MITACS initiative, which funds projects and study grants in ‘mathematics for information technology and complex systems’. These proceedings include papers from workshops on financial networks, network security and cryptography, and social networks. MITACS has shown that the partly ghettoized nature of network systems research has led to duplicated work in discrete fields, and thus this initiative has the potential to save time and accelerate the pace of research in a number of areas of network systems research.

The convergence of biology and computer science was initially motivated by the need to organize and process a growing number of biological observations resulting from rapid advances in experimental techniques. Today, however, close collaboration between biologists, biochemists, medical researchers, and computer scientists has also generated remarkable benefits for the field of computer science. Systemic Approaches in Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology: Recent Advances presents new techniques that have resulted from the application of computer science methods to the organization and interpretation of biological data. The book covers three subject areas: bioinformatics, computational biology, and computational systems biology. It focuses on recent, systemic approaches in computer science and mathematics that have been used to model, simulate, and more generally, experiment with biological phenomena at any scale.
