Excerpt from Recent Advances in Entomology IN preparing a second edition of this book two reasons have led to the decision to confine its scope within the original limits. Firstly, in any attempt to discuss recent advances in entomology, at all exhaustively, several volumes, each the size of the present one, would be needed. Even to include adequate extra chapters the size of the book would need to be increased a good deal beyond its prescribed limits. Secondly, those other aspects of entomology that commend themselves for inclusion are, to a large extent, provided for elsewhere. In this connection, insect physiology, insects and climate, general morphology, insects and plant viruses, for example, have already formed the subjects of recent books or monographs. The writers of these several books have discussed such subjects far more adequately than could be expressed within the limits of single chapters. Certain aspects of entomology, naturally, have required more revision than others. Under morphology, while current Views on Wing Venation have undergone but little change, Head Segmentation and the Genitalia have needed considerable revision. Also, recent studies of the musculature have led to revision of views respecting the homologies of certain of the appendages and their parts. As regards Metamorphosis, discoveries in regard to the presence of hormones are discussed. Palaeontology has developed so rapidly as to require very full revision of the original chapter: several new illustrations, taken from recent papers by Dr. F. M. Carpenter, have been included in this chapter with the author's permission. In dealing with the Sense Organs the subject of response to visual stimuli has been extended so as to include the results of a good deal of recent investigation. In this connection valuable help has been given by Dr. M. Hertz, which is here gratefully acknowledged. The subject of Stimulatory Organs has also been included. With regard to Biological Races. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation In the Record, vol. I., p. 236, Mr. T utt has a note on this question more especially with reference to the British Vanessa pairing in spring or autumn. In our New Zealand species (vanessa gonerilla) the pairing, I think, invariably takes place in Spring, as I have frequently observed them in September and October in copula on and about the native nettles, such being the foodplant of their larva. But I have not seen, or known, this species to pair in the autumn - W. W. Smith, Ashburton, N. Z. Imperfect development OF wings OF bombyx m0r1. - With regard to Mr. Mackonochie's article on Wing Development after Copulation, might I call his special attention to the fact that in the case quoted, the Specimen of Platypteryxfalcula was a female. Had it been a male, I very much doubt whether the development would have taken place, the latter being much more reduced than the former, never indeed long surviving the fulfilment of the purpose for which it was created. Several years ago I reared a number of larva of Bombyx mom, and many of the pupa hatching Simultaneously, several of the insects paired before developing their wings, after which, as far as I can remember, only a few females ever developed them at all fully - D. H. S. Steuart, 66, Albert Hall Mansions, W. February 27t/z, 1891. [i do not think sex in any way influences the development, which proceeds during copulation in both sexes. - ed.] retarded development OF wings.-i never saw an insect develop wings at the same rate of speed which Mrs. Bazett noticed in her Cbesias spartiata but no doubt every one will have remarked the quickness with which the wings on one side often develop, compared with the other side. Insects often wander about for a long time before the wings commence to expand; for instance, last year, I had an Acronycta (viminia) myricce which emerged two days before the wings commenced to develop, and after so long they developed perfectly. Excerpt from A Manual for the Study of Insects The Manual for the Study of Insects, published in 189 5, was written to meet the needs of teachers of Entomology when that science was in its infancy as an academic study. It was well received and accomplished its purpose, and there has been a continuous call for it since; it is now in its eighteenth edition. Owing to the rapid development Of the science it became necessary to revise the book and I began this before my retire ment in 1914. However, so great has been the growth of Entomology that this intended revision Of the Manual resulted in a new textbook, An Introduction to Entomology.
