In this book, distinguished scholars from Europe and the US examine a range of topical issues in environmental and resource economics. Employing cutting-edge tools, they take a fresh look at some of the most significant international and domestic issues at the forefront of public policy debates. The volume has two main themes: environmental policy making within a federalist context and valuation issues, including experimental design. Beyond this, the sixteen chapters give an overview of recent developments in the field and present important new views on pressing policy issues. Many of the chapters offer innovative approaches and contain original empirical or experimental evidence which may have considerable implications for environmental policy. As a whole, the volume provides the reader with a keen understanding of some of the most important theoretical and empirical work in environmental federalism, valuation and a number of other pertinent areas. This book extends current thinking and provides a state-of-the-art analysis of recent developments in environmental and resource economics. It will be indispensable for students, scholars and researchers in environmental economics and anyone wishing to remain at the frontier of advances in this arena.

Sustainable development remains a significant issue in a globalized world requiring new economic standards and practices for the betterment of the environment as well as the world economy. However, sustainable economics must manage environmental solutions to issues on multiple levels and within various disciplines. There is a need for studies that seek to understand how environmental economics and governance within small and large sectors affect the capability and wellbeing of the global economy. Advanced Integrated Approaches to Environmental Economics and Policy: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential publication that focuses on the strategic role of environmental issues within the global economy. While highlighting topics such as complementary currency, reusable waste, and urban planning, this book is ideally designed for policymakers, environmental lawyers, economists, sociologists, politicians, academicians, researchers, and students seeking current research on increasing an organization’s sustainable performance at both public and private levels.

In the Summer of 1991, Bob Carling, who was then Life Sciences Editor of Chapman & Hall, approached me over the possibility of producing an edited volume of works on economics and ecology. As we discussed the matter further, what became clear is that there is a growing literature on the' frontiers' of both disciplines that has involved economists 'borrowing' from ecology and ecologists 'borrowing' from economics. We decided that this volume should try to provide a small cross-section of that literature. I was very much interested in editing this volume for several reasons. First, one of my principal interests in economics has been how the economic analysis of natural resource and environmental problems can benefit from the concepts and lessons learned from other disciplines, in particular ecology. I was grateful at having the opportunity to pull together a selection of readings that illustrate how the integration of the two disciplines can lead to fruitful analysis. Second, I was also aware that, as Director of the London Environmental Economics Centre and as a Senior Researcher at the International Institute of Environment and Development, I was fortunate to have worked with or to have known a number of economists and ecologists whose work would be ideal for this volume. I was delighted that so many of my friends and colleagues were as enthusiastic about this project as I, and agreed to participate.
