Excerpt from Recent Happenings in Persia I would, then, ask my Persian friends to believe that my criticism is actuated by no feeling of un friendliness, but Solely by a desire to present facts in their true colours. I have to acknowledge my great indebtedness to H. H. Hormoz Mirza for having kindly offered to read that portion of this book which had been written prior to my departure from Persia, and for having placed at my disposal his wide knowledge regarding events and conditions. The Opinions expressed are, however, my own, since he agreed with me that it would be out of place for a native of the country to attempt to influence the impression formed by a soj ourner. Excerpt from The Literature of Persia Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them. Excerpt from The Struggle for Persia None of my predecessors (and they may be counted on the fingers) who have taken the almost impassable route between Eastern Russia (via Tabriz) to Teheran having thought fit to record their experiences, it devolves upon my unworthy self to narrate mine in this veritable "terra incognita." The interest lately awakened in England with reference to Persian affairs, together with the lamentable loss of British prestige and British influence, and the overwhelming power of Russia - as they appeared to me - must be my further excuse for bringing them to the notice of all lovers of king and country, in the earnest hope that means may be found to retrieve the paramount supremacy of England in a country where once it was without a rival. Excerpt from Persia The Persian Empire occupies the western and larger part of the Iranian plateau, which is situated between the Indus on the east and the Tigris and Euphrates on the west. Its altitude is considerable. Shiraz and Kerman in the south, Isfahan in the centre, and Kermanshah and Hamadan in the west all lie above 5,000 feet. In the north the altitude of Tabriz is over 4,000 feet and that of Teheran (the capital) and Meshed over 3,000 feet. The area of the country is enormous. The traveller who would pass from east to west in the north would traverse some 1,200 miles. From north to south the distance would average 600 to 700 miles. The snow and rainfall are scanty, averaging ten inches in the north and five inches in the south. On the other hand, in the provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, the rainfall is very heavy. On the plateau the climate is intensely dry, with hot days and cold nights. In the Caspian provinces the heavy rainfall creates a moist, malarious, and most unhealthy climate. In the narrow trip of country bordering the Persian Gulf the climate, except close to the sea, is intensely hot and dry. So scanty is the rainfall in view of the power of the sun hat, but for the high ranges, the country would be a desert. Excerpt from Queer Things About Persia It will be noticed that this book is written in the first person singular. I have not been in Persia, whereas Mr. De Lorey spent two years there as a member of the Legation of France at the Court of Teheran. It is right, therefore, that the descriptions should be his in form as they are in actuality. Our method of collaboration was very simple and direct. I suggested to him a general scheme for the book, drawn up on the lines of my Queer T [tings about japan. H e considered how far this was applicable to the conditions of Persia, and produced the actual scheme. Upon this we worked. Our method of work was for him to spend so many hours or days in thinking out the subject of a. Chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
