On April 25-27, 1989, over a hundred mathematicians, including eleven from abroad, gathered at the University of Illinois Conference Center at Allerton Park for a major conference on analytic number theory. The occa sion marked the seventieth birthday and impending (official) retirement of Paul T. Bateman, a prominent number theorist and member of the mathe matics faculty at the University of Illinois for almost forty years. For fifteen of these years, he served as head of the mathematics department. The conference featured a total of fifty-four talks, including ten in vited lectures by H. Delange, P. Erdos, H. Iwaniec, M. Knopp, M. Mendes France, H. L. Montgomery, C. Pomerance, W. Schmidt, H. Stark, and R. C. Vaughan. This volume represents the contents of thirty of these talks as well as two further contributions. The papers span a wide range of topics in number theory, with a majority in analytic number theory.

"This book is the first volume of a two-volume textbook for undergraduates and is indeed the crystallization of a course offered by the author at the California Institute of Technology to undergraduates without any previous knowledge of number theory. For this reason, the book starts with the most elementary properties of the natural integers. Nevertheless, the text succeeds in presenting an enormous amount of material in little more than 300 pages."-—MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

The Indian National Science Academy on the occasion ofthe Golden Jubilee Celebration (Fifty years of India's Independence) decided to publish a number of monographs on the selected fields. The editorial board of INS A invited us to prepare a special monograph in Number Theory. In reponse to this assignment, we invited several eminent Number Theorists to contribute expository/research articles for this monograph on Number Theory. Al though some ofthose invited, due to other preoccupations-could not respond positively to our invitation, we did receive fairly encouraging response from many eminent and creative number theorists throughout the world. These articles are presented herewith in a logical order. We are grateful to all those mathematicians who have sent us their articles. We hope that this monograph will have a significant impact on further development in this subject. R. P. Bambah v. C. Dumir R. J. Hans-Gill A Centennial History of the Prime Number Theorem Tom M. Apostol The Prime Number Theorem Among the thousands of discoveries made by mathematicians over the centuries, some stand out as significant landmarks. One of these is the prime number theorem, which describes the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers. It can be stated in various equivalent forms, two of which are: x (I) K(X) '" -I - as x --+ 00, ogx and Pn '" n log n as n --+ 00. (2) In (1), K(X) denotes the number of primes P ::s x for any x > O.

In this monograph, we study recent results on some categories of trigonometric/exponential sums along with various of their applications in Mathematical Analysis and Analytic Number Theory. Through the two chapters of this monograph, we wish to highlight the applicability and breadth of techniques of trigonometric/exponential sums in various problems focusing on the interplay of Mathematical Analysis and Analytic Number Theory. We wish to stress the point that the goal is not only to prove the desired results, but also to present a plethora of intermediate Propositions and Corollaries investigating the behaviour of such sums, which can also be applied in completely different problems and settings than the ones treated within this monograph. In the present work we mainly focus on the applications of trigonometric/exponential sums in the study of Ramanujan sums — which constitute a very classical domain of research in Number Theory — as well as the study of certain cotangent sums with a wide range of applications, especially in the study of Dedekind sums and a facet of the research conducted on the Riemann Hypothesis. For example, in our study of the cotangent sums treated within the second chapter, the methods and techniques employed reveal unexpected connections with independent and very interesting problems investigated in the past by R de la Bretèche and G Tenenbaum on trigonometric series, as well as by S Marmi, P Moussa and J-C Yoccoz on Dynamical Systems.Overall, a reader who has mastered fundamentals of Mathematical Analysis, as well as having a working knowledge of Classical and Analytic Number Theory, will be able to gradually follow all the parts of the monograph. Therefore, the present monograph will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers who wish to be informed on the latest developments on the topics treated.

Duality In Analytic Number Theory written by Peter D. T. A. Elliott and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-02-13 with Mathematics categories.

In this stimulating book, aimed at researchers both established and budding, Peter Elliott demonstrates a method and a motivating philosophy that combine to cohere a large part of analytic number theory, including the hitherto nebulous study of arithmetic functions. Besides its application, the book also illustrates a way of thinking mathematically: historical background is woven into the narrative, variant proofs illustrate obstructions, false steps and the development of insight, in a manner reminiscent of Euler. It is shown how to formulate theorems as well as how to construct their proofs. Elementary notions from functional analysis, Fourier analysis, functional equations and stability in mechanics are controlled by a geometric view and synthesized to provide an arithmetical analogue of classical harmonic analysis that is powerful enough to establish arithmetic propositions until now beyond reach. Connections with other branches of analysis are illustrated by over 250 exercises, structured in chains about individual topics.

Monumental proceedings (very handsomely produced) of a major international conference. The book contains 74 refereed articles which, apart from a few survey papers of peculiar interest, are mostly research papers (63 in English, 11 in French). The topics covered reflect the full diversity of the current trends and activities in modern number theory: elementary, algebraic and analytic number theory; constructive (computational) number theory; elliptic curves and modular forms; arithmetical geometry; transcendence; quadratic forms; coding theory. A conference on Analytic Number Theory and Diophantine Problems was held from June 24 to July 3, 1984 at the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. The conference was funded by the National Science Foundation, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. The papers in this volume represent only a portion of the many talks given at the conference. The principal speakers were Professors E. Bombieri, P. X. Gallagher, D. Goldfeld, S. Graham, R. Greenberg, H. Halberstam, C. Hooley, H. Iwaniec, D. J. Lewis, D. W. Masser, H. L. Montgomery, A. Selberg, and R. C. Vaughan. Of these, Professors Bombieri, Goldfeld, Masser, and Vaughan gave three lectures each, while Professor Hooley gave two. Special sessions were also held and most participants gave talks of at least twenty minutes each. Prof. P. Sarnak was unable to attend but a paper based on his intended talk is included in this volume. We take this opportunity to thank all participants for their (enthusiastic) support for the conference. Judging from the response, it was deemed a success. As for this volume, I take responsibility for any typographical errors that may occur in the final print. I also apologize for the delay (which was due to the many problems incurred while retyping all the papers). A. special thanks to Dollee Walker for retyping the papers and to Prof. W. H. Jaco for his support, encouragement and hard work in bringing the idea of the conference to fruition.
