The Image of Edessa was an image of Christ, which, according to tradition, was of miraculous origin. It was taken from Edessa to Constantinople in 944, and disappeared from known history in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade in 1204. It generated, however, a vast amount of literature and hundreds of copies in churches all over the Byzantine world. This book is a study of the literature, paintings, icons and other aspects related to the Image of Edessa. It examines how it was used as a tool to express Christ’s humanity and for various other purposes, and how some of the related literature became completely decontextualised and used as a magical charm, especially in the West.

Byzantine Media Subjects written by Glenn A. Peers and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-15 with History categories.

Byzantine Media Subjects invites readers into a world replete with images—icons, frescoes, and mosaics filling places of worship, politics, and community. Glenn Peers asks readers to think themselves into a world where representation reigned and humans followed, and indeed were formed. Interrogating the fundamental role of representation in the making of the Byzantine human, Peers argues that Byzantine culture was (already) posthuman. The Byzantine experience reveals the extent to which media like icons, manuscripts, music, animals, and mirrors fundamentally determine humans. In the Byzantine world, representation as such was deeply persuasive, even coercive; it had the power to affect human relationships, produce conflict, and form self-perception. Media studies has made its subject the modern world, but this book argues for media having made historical subjects. Here, it is shown that media long ago also made Byzantine humans, defining them, molding them, mediating their relationship to time, to nature, to God, and to themselves.

Architecture And Interpretation written by Jill A. Franklin and has been published by Boydell Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Architecture categories.

Essays centred on the methods, pleasures, and pitfalls of architectural interpretation. Architecture affects us on a number of levels. It can control our movements, change our experience of our own scale, create a particular sense of place, focus memory, and act as a statement of power and taste, to name but a few. Yet the ways in which these effects are brought about are not yet well understood. The aim of this book is to move the discussion forward, to encourage and broaden debate about the ways in which architecture is interpreted, with aview to raising levels of intellectual engagement with the issues in terms of the theory and practice of architectural history. The range of material covered extends from houses constructed from mammoth bones around 15,000 years ago in the present-day Ukraine to a surfer's memorial in Carpinteria, California; other subjects include the young Michelangelo seeking to transcend genre boundaries; medieval masons' tombs; and the mythographies of early modern Netherlandish towns. Taking as their point of departure the ways in which architecture has been, is, and can be written about and otherwise represented, the editors' substantial Introduction provides an historiographical framework for, and draws out the themes and ideas presented in, the individual contributors' essays. Questions about space and the sacred are now central to Byzantine studies. Recent scholarship has addressed issues of embodiment and performance, power and identity, environmental perceptions and territorial imaginations. At the same time, the mobility turn in the humanities prompts new approaches to and understandings of processes of circulation of people, objects and ideas. Drawing together illuminating contributions from scholars in history, art history, literature, geography, architecture and theology, Sacred Mobilities in Byzantium and Beyond sets the stage for further cross-disciplinary dialogue concerning Orthodox Christian spiritual culture and society in the Byzantine Empire and in the centuries after its fall. Contributors are Veronica della Dora, Ekaterine Gedevanishvili, Molly Greene, Mark Guscin, Christos Antonios Kakalis, Chrysovalantis Kyriacou, Maria Litina, Andrew Louth, Mihail Mitrea, Bissera Pentcheva, Rehav Rubin, and David Williams.

“Vivid historical writing . . . a fascinating and factual defense for the authenticity of the famous Shroud” (Christian Newswire). The Shroud of Turin, the traditional burial cloth of Jesus Christ, is either authentic or not. The Keramion, Lost and Found provides new answers to settle that centuries-old debate. In 2000, Philip Dayvault, a former FBI Special Agent, began a quest for ancient oil lamps in a faraway land, but it soon became an epic journey that gave rise to the questions… Could a small mosaic found in a faraway museum possibly have anything to do with numerous ancient, classical depictions of Jesus Christ? Could it bear an actual image of the God-Man, an image of God incarnate; and, perhaps, be the earliest known portrait image of Jesus Christ? Could it confirm vital, key elements of a 1700-year-old legend surrounding early Christianity? Could it possibly corroborate the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin as the first century burial cloth of Jesus Christ? Could the small mosaic, the ISA Tile, be the actual historical Keramion? Experience the providential discovery of the “key,” a beautiful mosaic that unlocks some of the mysteries of the Shroud and ancient, classical depictions of Jesus Christ in sacred art. Dayvault instinctively conducted this research from an investigative perspective. Now, ample evidence from this resolute and intriguing pursuit of the truth is finally revealed. With his guide and translator, Hafize, Dayvault traversed Turkey in search of ancient oil lamps, but found something much more illuminating. Be advised, though, you may also find something, perhaps, that you have been seeking all your life . . . the Truth!
