This paper analyzes patterns of forest products trade between Asia and Alaska. Secondary data were collected and analyzed to identify Alaska forest product trading partners and the species used. Some of the many trends occurring in the Asian forest products industry include the shift from solid wood products to engineered wood products, the evolution of China as "the factory to the world" where low-cost labor enables manufacturers to produce price-competitive wood products that are shipped to markets throughout the globe, and the entry of Russia, Europe, Asia, and Southern Hemisphere nations into the market with both log and lumber products. In spite of the global economic downturn, forest products exports from several suppliers are increasing. Analysis of U.S. trade data indicates that exports of spruce (Picea spp.), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) logs remain strong. Likewise, Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western redcedar lumber exports are also improving. Douglas-fir lumber exports to Japan and western hemlock lumber exports to South Korea showed strong recent gains. The outlook for continued increases in forest products exports to Asia is strong, and the authors recommend a coordinated Alaska forest products market effort targeting China, South Korea, and Japan.

Excerpt from Recent Trends in the Asian Forest Products Trade and Their Impact on Alaska The three largest forest products import countries in the world are the United States, Japan, and China. In 2008, the value of forest products imported by these countries was us$7.s billion for the United States, usss.3 billion for Japan, and uss4.2 billion for China (gti Another key forest products market is Europe. In 2008, Germany, France, United Kingdom, and Italy imported a combined total value of us$14.2 billion of forest products (harmonized code 4400) (gti A general trade pattern has developed where logs are exported to China from North America, Europe, and Asia, and finished forest products are exported from China to the United States, Japan, and Europe. Alaska forest products are an important part of this trade pattern, and it is important that Alaska manufacturers understand where their competitive advantages lie within this trade pattern. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Alaska, China, Japan trade pattern and the opportunities for Alaska forest products. In the United States, forest products producers are currently experiencing one of the worst economic downturns since World War II. In 2008, there were us. Housing starts, which was a 56 percent decline from million in 2005. As a result of the depressed housing market, lumber prices have also fallen to a historic low. According to the Random Lengths Lumber Composite Price Index (random Lengths lumber prices in 2008 were approximately 50 percent below 2004 levels (fig. One strategy for us. Suppliers to offset losses as a result of the economic downturn is to export. A well-planned export strategy can provide market diversification, which can help companies lessen the losses associated with economic downturns. However, embarking on an export venture is not a simple endeavor. Cunningham and Eastin's (2002) survey of North American exporters found that a successful export strategy requires a strong marketing commitment including translating product literature and providing strong customer support, after-sale service, and market maintenance. Individual foreign markets also have their own unique challenges. In China, for example, many construction projects are controlled by government agencies. Therefore, understanding government policy and establishing relationships with government officials is often critical to success (cao et al. Traditionally, there has been a strong forest products trade between Alaska and Asia. This trade relationship has developed owing to Alaska's proximity to Asia and, in the past, an abundance of high-quality timber. Although forest products markets in North America remain soft, markets in Asia are growing. However, to benefit from Asia's growing forest products market, it is important to understand the concepts of global shipping including containerization, intermodal transport, non vessel operating common carriers, and freight forwarders. One key development that could have a major impact on Alaska's forest products trade is the opening of the Port of Prince Rupert (British Columbia) in 2007. The Port of Prince Rupert ships lumber, logs, and wood pellets to Asia and is much closer to southeast Alaska than are the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The Prince Rupert port is also 1 day closer to Asia. Despite Prince Rupert's proximity to Alaska, however, there is still no regularly scheduled barge service between the Port of Prince Rupert and southeast Alaska. Potential connections that may develop are examined in this paper. This paper also examines the changing concepts of global shipping and how they affect Alaska's forest products industry.

By the end of World War II, the United States had become well integrated into the world markets for forest products. No longer can domestic prices of forest products be viewed as being wholly determined by domestic demand and supply, nor even by North American supply and demand, but must be viewed in a worldwide context. Originally published in 1980, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of global forestry, particularly as it pertains to international trade flows of forest products, and analyses the role of the United States in a global context. This is a valuable resource for any student or researcher interested in environmental studies, global trade relations, and foreign market development.

The award-winning and surprisingly hopeful story of one woman's search for resiliency in a warming world Several years ago, ecologist Lauren E. Oakes set out from California for Alaska's old-growth forests to hunt for a dying tree: the yellow-cedar. With climate change as the culprit, the death of this species meant loss for many Alaskans. Oakes and her research team wanted to chronicle how plants and people could cope with their rapidly changing world. Amidst the standing dead, she discovered the resiliency of forgotten forests, flourishing again in the wake of destruction, and a diverse community of people who persevered to create new relationships with the emerging environment. Eloquent, insightful, and deeply heartening, In Search of the Canary Tree is a case for hope in a warming world.

Because there is a lack of innovation research in the forest products industry and innovative activities in the industry are not well documented, this study attempted to fill that void. The objectives of this study were to understand the process and definition of innovation in the forest products industry, identify the constraints on innovative activities, identify resources that would improve innovation in forest products companies, compare the innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon, and provide a benchmark study for innovation in the forest products industry.‍?‍?This study revealed that there are several aspects of innovation in the forest products industry. In addition, the innovation process is a combination of semiformal development stages, trial and error, intuition, and luck. A variety of factors constrained companies from being more innovative, including government regulations, shipping and labor costs, lack of cash flow, raw material characteristics, marketing expertise, and raw material supply. There do not appear to be any resources that would be helpful to forest products companies, at least none that the interviewed companies could recommend. Offering companies the chance to exchange ideas and network is the most valuable resource available.‍?‍?The innovation environments in Alaska and Oregon are somewhat similar yet different in the marketing tactics employed and the techniques used to obtain market information.‍?‍?Furthermore, the type of innovation projects that each region focuses on differs, as does the actual process used to develop innovations. Future research should focus on completing a quantitative component to this study, developing short courses or 1-day seminars, identifying factors that contribute to innovation success and failure, investigating why the forest products industry is not innovative by nature, and exploring the external acquisition of innovation in the forest products industry.
