This book is about the cultural and economic significance of "street life." Ever since ancient Athens and Greece, Engwicht argues, streets have been a major center of commerce, socialization, and cultural exchange. But the advent of automobiles and suburbanization in the 20th century eroded the richness of American streetlife. Streets and sidewalks, once filled with people and furniture, are now filled with automobiles carrying citizens to those indoor streets, malls. Using an abundance of drawings that detail urban traffic patterns, Engwicht prescribes a series of creative methods for returning vibrancy to the street--everything from reducing traffic with more one-way routes to making avenues more like living rooms with the addition of rugs, television sets, and bulletin boards.

Reclaiming Our Cities and Towns provides groundbreaking answers to the problems that cars and traffic inflict upon our neighborhoods, streets, and pedestrian rights. It points the way toward "eco-cities" where people can move (via foot, bicycles, and mass transit) and interact freely-without fear and pollution. Advocating community control, this is an excellent how-to book on organizing and planning for sustainable urban development. Reclaiming Our Cities and Towns has been made available through New Catalyst Books. Mixed use development is about retaining or creating a mix of different uses in cities or neighbourhoods. The trend in UK development has been towards specialisation and areas with single uses. Increasing the mix of uses is thought to reduce the need to travel, lower the likelihood of crime, improve the ambience and attractiveness of areas and contribute to the sustainability of cities.

Our Choice: Democracy or Corporate Rule A handful of corporations and financial institutions command an ever-greater concentration of economic and political power in an assault against markets, democracy, and life. It's a “suicide economy,” says David Korten, that destroys the very foundations of its own existence. The bestselling 1995 edition of When Corporations Rule the World helped launch a global resistance against corporate domination. In this twentieth-anniversary edition, Korten shares insights from his personal experience as a participant in the growing movement for a New Economy. A new introduction documents the further concentration of wealth and corporate power since 1995 and explores why our institutions resolutely resist even modest reform. A new conclusion chapter outlines high-leverage opportunities for breakthrough change.

This book examines the neighborhoods of New York City to determine to what extent planning in New York addresses Sustainable City Principles (SCPs). Part I looks at the background to planning urban areas in the face of global urban changes. These changes (i.e. population movements and densification of cities) are placing pressures on cities worldwide. Chapter 1 provides a background to these global pressures (i.e. population growth) and their implications. Chapter 2 looks closer at New York planning and introduces Sustainable City Principles (SCPs). Part II introduces nine selected neighborhoods within Manhattan and examines to what extent planning of these neighborhoods addresses the SCPs. For each chapter a neighborhood background is provided and results of the author’s field survey are reviewed. Part III examines the selected neighborhoods within Brooklyn to determine to what extent planning of those neighborhoods addresses the SCPs. Part IV examines the last three neighborhoods (in Queens) and addresses the SCPs. Part V examines conclusions reached from examining the nine neighborhoods. These conclusions are used to determine the extent that the City Council (and the community) are addressing SCPs in planning neighborhoods. Finally, lessons learned from these conclusions are assessed for their relevance to planning neighborhoods anywhere in the world.

Reclaiming The Urban Commons written by Nick Rose and has been published by University of Western Australia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Backyard gardens categories.

We are in the midst of a great shift, a fundamental transformation in our relations with the earth and with each other. This shift poses humanity with a challenge: how to transition from a period of environmental devastation of the planet by humans to one of mutual benefit? How do we transform our relationship to the land, non-human lifeforms, and each other? Reclaiming the Urban Commons argues this change begins with a deeper understanding of and connection with the food we produce and consume. This book is a critical reflection on the past and the present of urban food growing in Australia, as well as a map and a passionate rallying call to a better future as an urbanised species. It addresses the critical question of how to design, share, and live well in our cities and towns. It describes how to translate concepts of sustainable production into daily practices and ways of sharing spaces and working together for mutual benefit, and also reflects on how we can learn from our productive urban past.Covering Aboriginal food systems, RAW gardens, backyard gardens and rooftop beekeeping to the latest in commoning and resilient urban food systems research, Reclaiming the Urban Commons gathers together leading innovators, researchers and practitioners of urban agriculture in Australia to share stories of what they are doing, how they are doing it, and why.
