This report provides recommendations to revise the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications relating to the distribution of live load to buried structures. The report details the development of simplified design equations (SDEs) for structural response based on three-dimensional (3D) analysis of 830 buried culverts. In addition, the report provides guidelines for conducting 2D and 3D modeling for design situations with conditions not covered by the SDEs. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to roadway and bridge designers.

Analysis And Design Of Gravity Flow Conduits And Buried Bridges written by Timothy J. McGrath and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-20 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book covers the structural analysis and design of buried gravity flow conduits, including traditional pipes, arches, box conduits, and buried bridges with spans up to 80 ft (25 m) and greater. The text primarily covers concrete, corrugated metal, and plastic conduits but is generally applicable to other materials. Applications include culverts, storm drains, sewers, and pedestrian and vehicular crossings. The book is intended to introduce the subject to practitioners new to the field, as well as provide detailed information for those with prior experience. The opening chapter presents historical background and basic design models to introduce important concepts and then follows with chapters devoted to materials, soils, soil-conduit interaction, and guidance on the use of finite elements for analysis. Then design methods for evaluating soil-conduit systems are presented, along with guidance on important considerations during installation. The book concludes with field experiences of when things went wrong and why. Analysis and Design of Gravity Flow Conduits and Buried Bridges offers a unified and comprehensive guide for practicing engineers working on buried pipe design, private consultants, and product manufacturers, as well as researchers in the area.

Inspired from the legacy of the previous four 3DFEM conferences held in Delft and Athens as well as the successful 2018 AM3P conference held in Doha, the 2020 AM3P conference continues the pavement mechanics theme including pavement models, experimental methods to estimate model parameters, and their implementation in predicting pavement performance. The AM3P conference is organized by the Standing International Advisory Committee (SIAC), at the time of this publication chaired by Professors Tom Scarpas, Eyad Masad, and Amit Bhasin. Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction II includes over 111 papers presented at the 2020 AM3P Conference. The technical topics covered include: - rigid pavements - pavement geotechnics - statistical and data tools in pavement engineering - pavement structures - asphalt mixtures - asphalt binders The book will be invaluable to academics and engineers involved or interested in pavement engineering, pavement models, experimental methods to estimate model parameters, and their implementation in predicting pavement performance.

Urban water management has to take an integrated approach that prioritizes sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) over gray infrastructure. This book elaborates on the planning and evaluation of pipework drainage systems with a focus on modern-day constraints to deliver a solution that favors sustainability as the overarching goal. The book includes a technical section on design of gray and green infrastructure, considering the total lifecycle costs of drainage systems. Advanced computer simulation techniques are discussed after covering the derivation of both standard and empirical equations for appropriate hydrology and hydraulics. The book provides an incorporation of reliability analyses for both green and gray infrastructure starting with techniques for forecasting flows, hydraulic performance, and lifecycle costs. The work also involves 3-D modeling, geospatial and big data analysis, and how these techniques are applied into city management—particularly beneficial to municipal engineers who are increasingly becoming involved in mapping the underground. Soil mechanics and subsurface drainage systems are analyzed and structural aspects of sewers are included. Finally, soil behavior in shear, retaining wall structures, and tunneling is briefly featured in the book. This book will be of interest to (under)graduate and postgraduate engineering students, drainage engineers, urban planners, architects, water engineers, developers, construction contractors, and municipal engineers.
