Lamps were developed and produced in largequantities and became commonplace in an era whenindustry-wide safety standards were not common. The evaluation and control of lamp hazards is a morecomplicated subject than similar tasks for a singlewavelengthlaser system, where only one optical hazardmight apply. The required radiometric measurementsare quite involved, for they do not deal with the simpleoptics of a point source, but rather with an extendedsource that may or may not be altered by diffusers orprojection optics. Also, the wavelength distribution ofthe lamp may be altered by ancillary optical elementssuch as diffusers and lenses, as well as variations inoperating voltage.
