This book comprises 30 chapters representing certain new trends in reconcenptualizing Confucian ideas, ideals, values and ways of thinking by scholars from China and abroad. While divergent in approaches, these chapters are converged on conceptualizing and reconceptualizing Confucianism into something philosophically meaningful and valuable to the people of the 21st century. They are grouped into three parts, and each is dedicated to one of the three major themes this book attempts to address. Part one is mainly on scholarly reviews of Confucian doctrines by which new interpretations will be drawn out. Part two is an assembled attempt to reexamine Confucian concepts, in which critiques of traditional views lead to new perspectives for perennial questions. Can we endorse valuable rights and freedoms—the cherished forms of equality and liberty we might call liberality—without liberalism? This book outlines such a possibility. Humane liberality upholds and deliberates equality, freedom, and justice through the Mencian virtue of humaneness, based in care and compassion. In positing humaneness to be the first virtue of government, Mencius directs us to formulate policies that are responsive to and promote the wellbeing of the people understood in terms of their actual lived and felt experience—their feelings and their flourishing. Rights and freedoms can and should be affirmed in ways that facilitate that flourishing. This pushes against the usual approaches to valuing rights and liberties of both Confucians and liberals, who tend to reason from abstract first principles rather than through care for people and responsiveness to their actual wants and needs. In setting out this vision, Humane Liberality first critically analyzes the broader problems and possibilities of affirming freedom, equality, and pluralism through Confucianism. It then outlines and promotes an underappreciated concrete humanist account of Mencian morality and politics, which has been overshadowed by more metaphysical orthodox interpretations of Mencius. Concrete humanism insists we adjudicate what is right not through eternal abstractions but instead through situated assessment of human emotions. In this way, humaneness offers a unique and uniquely compelling approach to reasoning about rights and liberties, and humane liberality recasts how we understand and practice Confucian values, liberal principles, and the promise and potential of incorporating the two.

When, if ever, is it permissible to afford special consideration to friends and family? How can we strive to be objective in our thinking, and is this always a feasible or appropriate aim? This book examines the categories of impartiality and objectivity by showing how they frame certain debates in epistemology, moral psychology, and metaethics, arguing that many traditional conceptions of objectivity fail to capture what is important to our identities as knowers, social beings, and moral agents. A new thesis of ‘perspectival realism’ is offered as a critique of strong objectivity, but in a way that avoids radical subjectivism or relativism. Locally-situated identities can provide their own criteria of epistemic and moral justification, and we may aspire to be impartial in a way that need not sacrifice particular perspectives and relationships. The election process reflects the essence of the electoral system. The justice of the electoral process can best reflect whether the electoral system is legitimate and democratic. In this book, procedural justice is combined with the electoral process to find the conditions and elements needed to achieve more justice in elections. “The electoral system is still based on the political will of the political party to rule, and the electoral system itself has serious legislative problems, which shows that the foundation of China's electoral system has problems. Then China's electoral system cannot truly represent the political voices and political interests of the people in the implementation, and at the same time cannot reflect the fairness of the election in the electoral procedure and the determination of the election results. The People's Congress system and the Political Consultation system simply cannot elect the right representatives who truly represent the interests of the people. The elected government and state power organs are separated from the people's political status, political interests, and development interests in the operation of their duties and the exercise of power.” By analyzing the problems in China's electoral system and election procedures, the book concludes the conditions for the realization of more justice, rationalization, and democratization of China's electoral system and election procedures through procedural justice. The spiritual connotation of procedural justice under the electoral system and election procedures are combined with the traditional Chinese democratic political culture to construct an electoral political culture adapted to the contemporary Chinese political environment, advancing the development of procedural justice in China's electoral system to realize the rationality, legitimacy, and democracy of elections.
