Reconsidering Global Environmental Governance: Coloniality, Extractivism, and the Pursuit of Environmental Justice employs the concept of coloniality to examine the relationship between global environmental governance and environmental justice. Global environmental governance is perceived to be the natural solution for global environmental problems; however, its liberal emphasis reproduces colonial hierarchies at the expense of marginalized groups in the Global North and South alike. To develop this argument, this book draws on case studies that elucidate multiple expressions of coloniality in instances of socio-environmental conflict. With a focus on extractivism, the authors explore case studies in Greece and Honduras to illustrate the impact of existing global environmental governance institutions on marginalized groups and local communities, as well as case studies of gender and multispecies justice to highlight the opportunities and limitations of efforts to challenge liberal governance institutions and provide new pathways for enhancing environmental justice. Overall, the book aims to initiate a debate on how to decolonize global environmental politics and will be of particular interest to teachers, researchers, and students of environmental studies, global governance, development studies, political ecology, international political economy, and critical theory, as well as policymakers and civil society specialists.

An examination of three major trends in global governance, exemplified by developments in transnational environmental rule-setting. The notion of global governance is widely studied in academia and increasingly relevant to politics and policy making. Yet many of its fundamental elements remain unclear in both theory and practice. This book offers a fresh perspective by analyzing global governance in terms of three major trends, as exemplified by developments in global sustainability governance: the emergence of nonstate actors; new mechanisms of transnational cooperation; and increasingly segmented and overlapping layers of authority. The book, which is the synthesis of a ten-year “Global Governance Project” carried out by thirteen leading European research institutions, first examines new nonstate actors, focusing on international bureaucracies, global corporations, and transnational networks of scientists; then investigates novel mechanisms of global governance, particularly transnational environmental regimes, public-private partnerships, and market-based arrangements; and, finally, looks at fragmentation of authority, both vertically among supranational, international, national, and subnational layers, and horizontally among different parallel rule-making systems. This book systematically explores the emerging legal discipline of Earth System Law (ESL), challenging the closed system of law and marking a new era in law and society scholarship. Law has historically provided stability, certainty, and predictability in the ordering of social relations (predominantly between humans). However, in recent decades the Earth’s relationship in law has changed with increasing recognition of the standing of Mother Earth, inherent rights of the environment (such as flora and fauna, rivers), and now recognition of the multiple relations of the Anthropocene. This book questions the fundamental assumption that ‘the law’ only applies to humans, and that the earth, as a system, has intrinsic rights and responsibilities. In the last ten years the planet has experienced its hottest period since human evolution, and by the year 2100, unless substantive action is taken, many species will be lost, and planetary conditions will be intolerable for human civilisation as it currently exists. Relationships between humans, the biosphere, and all planetary systems must change. The authors address these challenging topics, setting the groundwork of ESL to ensure sustainable development of the coupled socio-ecological system that the Earth has become. In an effort to reduce urban residents' exposure to climate change and natural disasters, resettlement programs are becoming widespread across the Global South. Yet, while resettlement may reduce a region's future climate-related disaster risk, it can also often increase poverty and vulnerability. This volume collates the findings from a research project that examined urban areas across the globe, including case studies from India, Uganda, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
