It features almost 30 works, including 13 sculptures from the Han-Tang dynasties, and hand scrolls, hanging scrolls, and album leaves from the Tang-Qing dynasties. By examining the tremendous range of equine depictions in Chinese art, it reveals the horse as an exceptionally fluid and potent means for the continual construction and reconstruction of Chinese identity, a figure of enduring fascination and value given its usefulness -- both real and symbolic -- to humankind.

This book is the first monograph to study the processes of establishing and reconstructing the academician system, and the landmark events in the history of science and technology in 20th century China. It also provides new insights to help us understand the process of scientific institutionalization in modern China. Drawing on detailed archive records, it discusses the process of the establishment of the Academia Sinica's academician system in the Republic of China, as well as the unique and tortuous transformation process from members of the Academic Divisions(学部委员)to academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院)in the People's Republic of China. These play an important part of China's modernization process, and reflect scientific institutionalization in China. The book also highlights the fact that under the leadership of the government, the academic elite became participants in the construction of national academic system after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Chinese Art And Dynastic Time written by Wu Hung and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-03 with Art categories.

A sweeping look at Chinese art across the millennia that upends traditional perspectives and offers new pathways for art history Throughout Chinese history, dynastic time—the organization of history through the lens of successive dynasties—has been the dominant mode of narrating the story of Chinese art, even though there has been little examination of this concept in discourse and practice until now. Chinese Art and Dynastic Time uncovers how the development of Chinese art was described in its original cultural, sociopolitical, and artistic contexts, and how these narratives were interwoven with contemporaneous artistic creation. In doing so, leading art historian Wu Hung opens up new pathways for the consideration of not only Chinese art, but also the whole of art history. Wu Hung brings together ten case studies, ranging from the third millennium BCE to the early twentieth century CE, and spanning ritual and religious art, painting, sculpture, the built environment, and popular art in order to examine the deep-rooted patterns in the historical conceptualization of Chinese art. Elucidating the changing notions of dynastic time in various contexts, he also challenges the preoccupation with this concept as the default mode in art historical writing. This critical investigation of dynastic time thus constitutes an essential foundation to pursue new narrative and interpretative frameworks in thinking about art history. Remarkable for the sweep and scope of its arguments and lucid style, Chinese Art and Dynastic Time probes the roots of the collective imagination in Chinese art and frees us from long-held perspectives on how this art should be understood. Differences Preserved written by Hsingyuan Tsao and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Art categories.

Differences Preserved presents works excavated from two sets of tombs in northern China. Tomb objects from the ninth to twelfth centuries, along with reproductions of the lively and vibrant tomb wall murals, serve as the basis for a cultural reassessment of the Liao (907-1125) and Song (960-1127) dynasties. Objects such as fine ceramic pots and bowls, tea services, and furniture present a story of daily life and of how people thought of themselves. Hsingyuan Tsao's innovative analysis represents a new direction in Chinese scholarship by considering the overlooked accomplishments of non-Han groups within the history of Chinese culture.
