The Swahili-speaking peoples of the East African coast are one of the most-studied and yet least-understood peoples of Africa. This paradox stems from the long-standing assumption that the Swahili represent an Arab Muslim culture divorced from their Bantu-speaking African neighbors—“alien jewels on a strange and distant shore.” This has led historians, linguists, archaeologists, and students of literature alike to treat the Swahili as a foreign civilization and to disregard the African nature of Swahili culture and society. Derek Nurse and Thomas Spear show that what distinguishes the Swahili from their neighbors is not their alien “race” or culture; it is the fact that they are maritime urban-dwelling farmers and herders. The most significant element in Swahili history is thus not their foreign origins, but their development of syncretic and specialized cultures alongside those of other African peoples. The Swahili brings together the authors’ own original research and a reinterpretation of earlier works in a fresh and comprehensive synthesis, showing the development of these peoples, their language, cultures, and societies, over more than five centuries. The emphasis is on a broad conceptual approach, establishing an overall framework in which existing local studies can be viewed in a wider context.

How and why are languages constantly changing? Historical lingustics seeks to find out by going beyond the history of individual languages to discover the general principles which underlie language change. But our evidence is severely limited. Most of the world's languages are still unwritten, and even in areas with long written traditions, such as Europe and the Near East, documentary evidence stretches only a little way back along the path of the historical development of languages. How, then, can we uncover our long linguistic prehistory, and what can it tell us about language change? This new textbook is an accessible general guide for students with an elementary knowledge of linguistics to the methods and theoretical bases of linguistic reconstruction, and of newer, less well established principles such as the application of linguistic universals and language typology, and quantitative techniques. Finally he reviews the principles for establishing language relationships and for uncovering information about the homelands and cultures of the prehistoric speakers of reconstructed languages.

The works of Edward Sapir (1884 - 1939) continue to provide inspiration to all interested in the study of human language. Since most of his published works are relatively inaccessible, and valuable unpublished material has been found, the preparation of a complete edition of all his published and unpublished works was long overdue. The wide range of Sapir's scholarship as well as the amount of work necessary to put the unpublished manuscripts into publishable form pose unique challenges for the editors. Many scholars from a variety of fields as well as American Indian language specialists are providing significant assistance in the making of this multi-volume series.

Why should we study language? How do the ways in which we communicate define our identities? And how is this all changing in the digital world? Since 1993, many have turned to Language, Culture, and Society for answers to questions like those above because of its comprehensive coverage of all critical aspects of linguistic anthropology. This seventh edition carries on the legacy while addressing some of the newer pressing and exciting challenges of the 21st century, such as issues of language and power, language ideology, and linguistic diasporas. Chapters on gender, race, and class also examine how language helps create-and is created by-identity. New to this edition are enhanced and updated pedagogical features, such as learning objectives, updated resources for continued learning, and the inclusion of a glossary. There is also an expanded discussion of communication online and of social media outlets and how that universe is changing how we interact. The discussion on race and ethnicity has also been expanded to include Latin- and Asian-American English vernacular.

This title combines archaeology and linguistics to explore Africa's early history, especially where written records are scarce or absent. By pairing the physical evidence of past societies with insights from language evolution, the book reveals a fuller picture of Africa's cultural and historical development. Archaeology provides tangible data on material culture and timelines, while linguistics offers clues about past social structures, beliefs, and migrations through language relationships. Together, these fields offer complementary perspectives on Africa's past, allowing scholars to reconstruct societal links and movements across time and space. The book's contributors, experts in archaeology and linguistics, present case studies from four major regions: Nubia and northern Sudan, equatorial Africa, eastern Africa, and Ghana. Each section begins with a regional overview that synthesizes existing archaeological and linguistic findings, framing the case studies within broader historical patterns. For example, in Nubia, where evidence is relatively complete, the section discusses correlations that extend into northeastern Africa. In equatorial Africa, linguistic data is more robust, while archaeological evidence is still emerging, showing intriguing alignment with linguistic patterns. Eastern Africa focuses on the impacts of Bantu expansion and early agricultural practices, while the West African section, despite limited data, centers on recent insights from Ghana, illustrating both progress and research gaps. By presenting these regions, the book demonstrates the significant potential of combining archaeological and linguistic methods to uncover Africa's past. While some areas, such as West Africa, still require further exploration, the integration of these two disciplines reveals a complex, dynamic historical landscape and raises new questions for future research. The collection shows that archaeology and linguistics together provide a powerful framework for understanding Africa's early societies and lays a foundation for deeper investigations into the continent's history.
