However, those who suggest a return to Getlio Vargas's self-styled "social democracy" are misguided by the magnificent visions, impressive efforts to increase the State's cognitive capacity, and far-reaching social legislation of his era. Reconstructing the Brazilian Nation goes beyond the analysis of national debates and laws and explores the implementation of education policy from the national level to the regional, municipal, and individual school levels in two key states, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul. The book shows that Vargas's reforms were characterized by a technocratic modernization philosophy, a dualist concept of education, political indoctrination, and the aim of cultural and ethnic homogenization. Race on the Move takes readers on a journey from Brazil to the United States and back again to consider how migration between the two countries is changing Brazilians' understanding of race relations. Brazil once earned a global reputation as a racial paradise, and the United States is infamous for its overt social exclusion of nonwhites. Yet, given the growing Latino and multiracial populations in the United States, the use of quotas to address racial inequality in Brazil, and the flows of people between each country, contemporary race relations in each place are starting to resemble each other. Tiffany Joseph interviewed residents of Governador Valadares, Brazil's largest immigrant-sending city to the U.S., to ask how their immigrant experiences have transformed local racial understandings. Joseph identifies and examines a phenomenon—the transnational racial optic—through which migrants develop and ascribe social meaning to race in one country, incorporating conceptions of race from another. Analyzing the bi-directional exchange of racial ideals through the experiences of migrants, Race on the Move offers an innovative framework for understanding how race can be remade in immigrant-sending communities.

The military justified this step with the argumentation, that Goulart was a populist. His policy was marked by hyperinflation and the polarization between the right and the left wings. The coup d'état was also necessary to fight the major enemy: the communism. The dictators of the military saw themselves as guarantors for a moral, political and economical reconstruction of Brazil and furthermore as an elitist leadership that connected military values with the strong belief in progress. In the following 21 years they established a new generation of regime-dependent technocrats and bureaucrats. The preconditions for this progressive concept were lying within the fields of national security, elimination of political opposition and communist complots. Brazil found a reliable ally against the ‘communist threat’ in the USA.On 11 April 1964 Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco was elected to become the first president of the military dictatorship that was going to last until 1985. This paper is supposed to give an overview about the economic model that the military pursued during their dictatorship. Among that it will show the rise and fall of this model and the consequences for the population.

Why and how has race become a central aspect of politics during this century? This book addresses this pressing question by comparing South African apartheid and resistance to it, the United States Jim Crow law and protests against it, and the myth of racial democracy in Brazil. Anthony Marx argues that these divergent experiences had roots in the history of slavery, colonialism, miscegenation and culture, but were fundamentally shaped by impediments and efforts to build national unity. In South Africa and the United States, ethnic or regional conflicts among whites were resolved by unifying whites and excluding blacks, while Brazil's longer established national unity required no such legal racial crutch. Race was thus central to projects of nation-building, and nationalism shaped uses of race. Professor Marx extends this argument to explain popular protest and the current salience of issues of race.

In 1985 the Pelourinho neighborhood in Salvador, Brazil was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the next decades, over 4,000 residents who failed to meet the state's definition of "proper Afro-Brazilianness" were expelled to make way for hotels, boutiques, NGOs, and other attractions. In Revolt of the Saints, John F. Collins explores the contested removal of the inhabitants of Brazil’s first capital and best-known site for Afro-Brazilian history, arguing that the neighborhood’s most recent reconstruction, begun in 1992 and supposedly intended to celebrate the Pelourinho's working-class citizens and their culture, revolves around gendered and racialized forms of making Brazil modern. He situates this focus on national origins and the commodification of residents' most intimate practices within a longer history of government and elite attempts to "improve" the citizenry’s racial stock even as these efforts take new form today. In this novel analysis of the overlaps of race, space, and history, Collins thus draws on state-citizen negotiations of everyday life to detail how residents’ responses to the attempt to market Afro-Brazilian culture and reimagine the nation’s foundations both illuminate and contribute to recent shifts in Brazil’s racial politics.
