More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.

The Knee written by W. Müller and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

This new treatise is the most outstanding piece of work on the knee and its associated ligaments currently available. Never before have I seen such an extensive study of the biomechanics of the knee with such a comprehensive review of the literature. The first section of the book, which deals with the functional anatomy (structure and biomechanics), immediately alerts the reader to the necessity of understanding the natural develop ment and action of the related structures, clearly emphasizing that successful diagnosis and treatment cannot otherwise be expected; the many who want an easy standard approach to each classic problem may find this hard to accept. Study what Werner Muller has written and compare it with your own findings from repeated dissection of anatomical specimens. The author goes on to stress that to have a real grasp of reconstructive surgery of the ligaments, one must be properly acquainted with the pathology and the repair of acute lesions. In no other way can one learn to recognize chronic problems. Once this step has been mastered it can be seen that the reconstructive procedures that Muller advocates do, for the most part, follow the laws of Nature rather than create the kind of abnormalities which often disrupt natural anatomical func tion.

The Knee And The Cruciate Ligaments written by R.P. Jakob and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

This book summarizes the experience gained by the Orthopedic Study Group for the Knee (OAK) of the Swiss Orthopedic Society in dealing with knee problems relating to deficiencies of the cruciate ligaments. The editors, R.P. Jakob and H.-U.Staubli, have collaborated with international authorities to produce this ex cellent work dealing with a great many aspects of knee surgery and especially the problems of the cruciate ligaments. For clarity, the book begins with definitions and explanations of basic biomechan ical terms. The chapters on Anatomy and Biomechanics present up-to-date scien tific information based on anatomic and biomechanical principles as they are ap plied in modern knee surgery. The second part of the book focuses on the OAK-sanctioned approach to knee documentation and evaluation, which is a valuable supplement to other knee evaluation schemes. The European Society for Knee Surgery (ESKA) and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) are currently at tempting to combine the advantages of the OAK system with an internationally valid evaluation scheme to create a standard evaluation and documentation sys tem that will be acceptable to all physicians.

Treatment of articular cartilage pathology in the knees of young and active patients is a challenging and controversial issue. Biologic Knee Reconstruction: A Surgeon's Guide is a how-to, step-by-step guide that addresses the evaluation and management of this unique patient population. Internationally renowned cartilage experts Dr. Brian J. Cole and Dr. Joshua D. Harris, along with their contributors, present information on normal and abnormal history and physical examination. The reader will learn proper decision-making using a patient-centered approach of treatment, increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome. In addition to radiographic assessment of articular cartilage, Biologic Knee Reconstruction discusses the use of biomarkers, defect classification, and patient-reported and surgeon-measured outcomes. Aggressive nonsurgical medical management, including medications, injections, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation, is also presented. Biologic Knee Reconstruction also discusses the management of concomitant pathologies such as malalignment, meniscal deficiency, and ligamentous instability. Selection of surgical cartilage restorative treatment options is multifactorial, requiring consideration of several patient-, knee-, and defect-specific issues. All contemporary open and arthroscopic cartilage techniques are presented in detail with high resolution figures. A unique feature of Biologic Knee Reconstruction is the presentation of several chapters discussing non-medical issues highly pertinent to the advancement and future of this field: funding of research and cost of new advanced technologies, regulation of advanced cellular, tissue, and genetic technologies, evidence-based medicine and clinical trial design and conduct, and the ethics of allograft tissues and stem cell use. Features: Technique preference cards from the experts performing cartilage surgery Patient education information The most up-to-date descriptions of advanced cartilage techniques Unique chapters not covered in books elsewhere, including: Biomarkers Patient-reported outcomes assessment Newer injection techniques (PRP, stem cells) One- and two-stage open and arthroscopic techniques using chondrocyte- and stem cell based cell therapies Costs and public and private funding of research Barriers to high-quality randomized trials Governmental regulation and availability/accessibility to patients Gene therapy and tissue engineering Ethics of articular cartilage surgery with stem cells, ex-vivo cell manipulation, and juvenile tissue sources With the most up-to-date content and step-by-step methods for surgical procedures, Biologic Knee Reconstruction: A Surgeon's Guide is the perfect addition to the bookshelf of the orthopedic surgeon, cartilage researcher, sports physical therapist, or athletic trainer who evaluates and manages this unique patient population.

Minimally invasive joint replacement has become one of the hottest topics in the orthopedic world. In the case of the knee, however, this concept has been widely misunderstood. All too frequently it is taken to mean keyhole surgery in which traditional components are implanted with a shorter surgical time. Such an approach in fact has few benefits and various possible dangers. In this book, international experts discuss truly minimally invasive knee reconstruction techniques that involve tissue-sparing surgery and small implants and permit preservation of both the anterior and the posterior cruciate ligament. These techniques have the key advantage of respecting the physiological joint biomechanics. They also entail minimal removal of bone tissue from the tibia and only a small skin incision that avoids damage to the extensor apparatus. All of the most innovative techniques used in uni- and bicompartmental knee reconstruction are covered in detail, including computer-assisted procedures. Long-term results are reported, and pitfalls, highlighted. The reader will learn how, with careful selection of patients and rigorous surgical technique, compartmental reconstruction offers a valid alternative to total knee replacement.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the basic science and clinical evidence for non-arthroplasty interventions in the adult knee. It aims to cover all aspects of joint-preserving knee surgery, from injectable therapies such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapies to surgical interventions such as meniscal repair and replacement, ligament reconstructions, and osteotomies. Following discussion of clinical assessment and imaging, individual chapters focus on specific clinical problems, including patellofemoral joint disorders, chondral injuries, and bone tumors. For each condition, a thorough overview is provided, describing clinical assessment, management (including surgical and non-surgical methods), and novel therapies. The contributors are experts in their fields from across Europe and are drawn from the worlds of clinical and academic orthopedic surgery. This book is unique in its coverage of the entire span of non-arthroplasty knee surgery and its focus on both clinical and basic science aspects. It will be helpful for knee surgeons and those engaged in research on knee-related topics, but also for students and other physicians involved in the care of patients with disorders of the knee.
