Jan Leder also shows the significant contributions made by women in jazz and their involvement playing jazz since its beginnings. The book contains two parts: Discography of Women in Jazz and Collective Section. The first section arranges names alphabetically by name of player with works arranged chronologically for each player. The second section is a chronological listing of recordings with two or more players. It gives date, place, name of orchestra, director, performers, recording titles, and company. Index of performers. An excellent resource on the subject. Reference Book Review This discography presents as complete a picture as possible of the recording activity of women jazz instrumentalists between 1913 and 1968. It is divided into two sections. The first section is alphabetical by the last name of the player and chronological within each player's section; the second is a chronologically arranged collective section containing information on recordings with two or more women players. The essays in this collection consider the diaries And journals of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Diaries and journals took many forms -depending on the occupation, gender, social status, and religious commitment of the writer. They ranged in their forms from brief notes. Related to family business, and national events In preprinted almanacs or the pages of a family Bible, to examinations of spiritual and material States in books dedicated to that purpose. Both Domestic and foreign travel afforded women And men reasons for keeping a diary, and these Varied from highly scientific accounts to more. Personal considerations of the pleasures and discomforts of travel Generically, the diary is situated uneasily, yet fascinatingly between literature and history. Once considered as a pure form of unstructured personal truth telling, the diary is now recognized as a form of writing created by historic conditions, governed by cultural imperatives, and based on literary models, and therefore reflects powerfully on its historical moments and the relationship between life as lived and life as represented in texts.

Echo And Narcissus written by Amy Lawrence and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-07-23 with Performing Arts categories.

Do women in classical Hollywood cinema ever truly speak for themselves? In Echo and Narcissus, Amy Lawrence examines eight classic films to show how women's speech is repeatedly constructed as a "problem," an affront to male authority. This book expands feminist studies of the representation of women in film, enabling us to see individual films in new ways, and to ask new questions of other films. Using Sadie Thompson (1928), Blackmail (1929), Rain (1932), The Spiral Staircase, Sorry,Wrong Number, Notorious, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Lawrence illustrates how women's voices are positioned within narratives that require their submission to patriarchal roles and how their attempts to speak provoke increasingly severe repression. She also shows how women's natural ability to speak is interrupted, made difficult, or conditioned to a suffocating degree by sound technology itself. Telephones, phonographs, voice-overs, and dubbing are foregrounded, called upon to silence women and to restore the primacy of the image. Unlike the usage of "voice" by feminist and literary critics to discuss broad issues of authorship and point of view, in film studies the physical voice itself is a primary focus. Echo and Narcissus shows how assumptions about the "deficiencies" of women's voices and speech are embedded in sound's history, technology, uses, and marketing. Moreover, the construction of the woman's voice is inserted into the ideologically loaded cinematic and narrative conventions governing the representation of women in Hollywood film.
