This book explores how experienced party organisers in the UK work to recruit and to retain party activists for local campaigning. Local door-to-door campaigning is widely regarded as being a key element in a successful election campaign. However, for door-to-door campaigning to work, a large number of volunteer activists are required. The question then is: How can parties identify, recruit and retain such volunteer activists? Based on interviews with highly experienced campaigners, original party documents, the wider campaigning and volunteering literature, numerous informal conversations and the author’s own experience of local campaigning over a 20 year period, this book provides an answer to that question. It shows how potential activists are identified, encouraged to become active and supported through their initial encounter with local campaigning. The author also shows how local parties can encourage activists to remain active by creating a ‘retention enhancing campaigning environment’ and what that involves.

Maps the ways political parties remain vital components in the American political system, especially in the eleven states in the South As Tocqueville noted more than 100 years ago, “No countries need associations more . . . than those with a democratic social state.” Although some contemporary observers see a decline in associations, especially in the political sphere, the contributors in this volume argue not only that political parties remain an essential component of the American political system but also that grassroots political groups have revitalized the political process, especially in the South. Using data gathered from local party officials in the eleven southern states, the authors examine such key issues as: Who becomes involved in local party organizations and why? How do parties recruit and retain workers? What are the ideological and issue orientations of these activists? How does intraparty factionalism affect local party organizations? What is the connection between the party organization and its external environment? The large regional database provides these contributors with the opportunity to extend the study of local party organization and activists, thus addressing some of the significant gaps in previous research. The additional data enable them to clarify the nature of local party organizations and, in a larger sense, the role of the parties in the contemporary American political system.

A political party is a political organization that typically seeks to influence government policy, usually by nominating their own candidates and trying to seat them in political office. Parties participate in electoral campaigns and educational outreach or protest actions. Parties often espouse an expressed ideology or vision bolstered by a written platform with specific goals, forming a coalition among disparate interests. An advocacy group is a group or an organization which tries to influence the government but does not hold power in the government. "In Dalit Politics, Amit Ahuja uses the Dalit case to develop a powerful new theory of the often orthogonal relationship between social and political mobilization. He argues that when a marginalized ethnic group's social mobilization precedes its electoral mobilization, the marginalized group's ethnic party will perform poorly. This is because any political inclusion won by a marginalized group's movement weakens the ethnic bloc voting required by its ethnic political party to succeed. When Dalit social movements succeed, competition for their votes increases at the local level, which in turn lowers the importance of caste for differentiating among parties. In areas where marginal groups have a tradition of successfully social mobilization, they prefer material goods over symbolic goods--which serves to divvy up party preferences within the group. Yet when Dalit social mobilization is absent or weak, other parties do not compete for them. Without competition for marginalized voters, their voting blocs are preserved. Ironically, marginalized ethnic group parties are more likely to succeed. Ahuja also analyzes the human development outcomes and finds another irony: in the social sphere, caste solidarity improves public goods provision for the marginalized group, but in the electoral sphere, the effects are negative because such parties are weak political clients. Democratically elected officials are less accountable to them. From 1998 to 2005, six elections took place in postcommunist Europe that had the surprising outcome of empowering the opposition and defeating authoritarian incumbents or their designated successors. Valerie J. Bunce and Sharon L. Wolchik compare these unexpected electoral breakthroughs. They draw three conclusions. First, the opposition was victorious because of the hard and creative work of a transnational network composed of local opposition and civil society groups, members of the international democracy assistance community and graduates of successful electoral challenges to authoritarian rule in other countries. Second, the remarkable run of these upset elections reflected the ability of this network to diffuse an ensemble of innovative electoral strategies across state boundaries. Finally, elections can serve as a powerful mechanism for democratic change. This is especially the case when civil society is strong, the transfer of political power is through constitutional means, and opposition leaders win with small mandates.
