Recuerdos del pasado, publicada en 1882 a manera de folletín en el diario La Época y como libro en 1886, es una obra autobiográfica basada en las memorias y apuntes de viajes de Vicente Pérez Rosales. Allí narra sus vivencias, no solo en nuestro país, desde los inicios de la independencia y luego durante la colonización alemana en Llanquihue, sino también en Argentina, Europa y California. La obra se constituye como una de las más relevantes de la literatura nacional, pues en ella se registran descripciones de las costumbres y tradiciones de la época, de la vida política y social, de la geografía del país, del esfuerzo de los colonos en el sur de Chile, entre otros aspectos fundamentales de nuestra historia. De este modo, a pesar de la escritura testimonial, en primera persona, el extenso relato sobrepasa los límites de lo personal y se ha convertido en un importante registro histórico del siglo XIX. El volumen se divide en veinticinco capítulos, los que se inician en 1814, cuando Pérez Rosales era un niño y su entorno era el Santiago de la Patria Vieja, y concluyen alrededor de 1860, cerca de finalizar el gobierno de Montt. Así, el relato, entre muchas otras cosas, va dando cuenta de la transformación y el progreso que vivió la ciudad, que comienza siendo una especie de “aldea” hasta convertirse en una gran capital. Se trata de obra de un valor incalculable y un aporte precioso a la historia y la literatura chilenas.
