The analysis of recurrences in dynamical systems by using recurrence plots and their quantification is still an emerging field. Over the past decades recurrence plots have proven to be valuable data visualization and analysis tools in the theoretical study of complex, time-varying dynamical systems as well as in various applications in biology, neuroscience, kinesiology, psychology, physiology, engineering, physics, geosciences, linguistics, finance, economics, and other disciplines. This multi-authored book intends to comprehensively introduce and showcase recent advances as well as established best practices concerning both theoretical and practical aspects of recurrence plot based analysis. Edited and authored by leading researcher in the field, the various chapters address an interdisciplinary readership, ranging from theoretical physicists to application-oriented scientists in all data-providing disciplines.

The chapters in this book originate from the research work and contributions presented at the Sixth International Symposium on Recurrence Plots held in Grenoble, France in June 2015. Scientists from numerous disciplines gathered to exchange knowledge on recent applications and developments in recurrence plots and recurrence quantification analysis. This meeting was remarkable because of the obvious expansion of recurrence strategies (theory) and applications (practice) into ever-broadening fields of science. It discusses real-world systems from various fields, including mathematics, strange attractors, applied physics, physiology, medicine, environmental and earth sciences, as well as psychology and linguistics. Even readers not actively researching any of these particular systems will benefit from discovering how other scientists are finding practical non-linear solutions to specific problems. The book is of interest to an interdisciplinary audience of recurrence plot users and researchers interested in time series analysis in particular, and in complex systems in general.

This book features 13 papers presented at the Fifth International Symposium on Recurrence Plots, held August 2013 in Chicago, IL. It examines recent applications and developments in recurrence plots and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) with special emphasis on biological and cognitive systems and the analysis of coupled systems using cross-recurrence methods. Readers will discover new applications and insights into a range of systems provided by recurrence plot analysis and new theoretical and mathematical developments in recurrence plots. Recurrence plot based analysis is a powerful tool that operates on real-world complex systems that are nonlinear, non-stationary, noisy, of any statistical distribution, free of any particular model type and not particularly long. Quantitative analyses promote the detection of system state changes, synchronized dynamical regimes or classification of system states. The book will be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience of recurrence plot users and researchers interested in time series analysis of complex systems in general.

Nonlinearities In Economics written by Giuseppe Orlando and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-31 with Business & Economics categories.

This interdisciplinary book argues that the economy has an underlying non-linear structure and that business cycles are endogenous, which allows a greater explanatory power with respect to the traditional assumption that dynamics are stochastic and shocks are exogenous. The first part of this work is formal-methodological and provides the mathematical background needed for the remainder, while the second part presents the view that signal processing involves construction and deconstruction of information and that the efficacy of this process can be measured. The third part focuses on economics and provides the related background and literature on economic dynamics and the fourth part is devoted to new perspectives in understanding nonlinearities in economic dynamics: growth and cycles. By pursuing this approach, the book seeks to (1) determine whether, and if so where, common features exist, (2) discover some hidden features of economic dynamics, and (3) highlight specific indicators of structural changes in time series. Accordingly, it is a must read for everyone interested in a better understanding of economic dynamics, business cycles, econometrics and complex systems, as well as non-linear dynamics and chaos theory.

This paper investigates, by means of recurrence quantification analysis, the characteristics of trade cycles and economic development. Trade cycles are complex phenomena oscillating because of economic downturns and expansions. In this paper the features of the underlying dynamics are studied over an extensive dataset e.g. Levy and Chen, OECD, BEA, etc. It is shown that recurrence quantification analysis can be suitably applied to economics and, therefore, may help in anticipating transitions from laminar (i.e. regular) to turbulent (i.e. chaotic) phases such as USA GDP in 1949, 1953, etc. Moreover, recurrence quantification analysis detects differences between macroeconomic variables, and highlights hidden features of economic dynamics.

Cross Recurrence Quantification Analysis (CRQA) is based on Cross-recurrence plots (CRP) and can be used to quantify the relationship between bivariate time series. CRQA has been used to detect cover songs, analyze social interactions and analyze vectorcardiogram data to determine heart disease in patients. In this thesis, CRQA is utilized to analyze county-level responses to Covid in the United States. This method allows us to cluster counties with minimal contextual information. The only contextual information required is population data of each county. First, daily Covid case data is obtained and preprocessed, resulting in time series of covid cases in US counties. Second, CRQA is applied to every countywise pair and dissimilarity matrices are obtained for each CRQA measure. Third, multi-dimensional scaling is used on the resulting dissimilarity matrices. Lastly, the K-Means clustering algorithm is applied, resulting in clusters of counties in the United States that share common similarities in Covid patterns and trends.

We investigate the issue of deterministic vs. stochastic dynamics in financial time series. We demonstrate a way to to reveal nonstochastic dynamical structures in daily stock market index returns, combining Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) and wavelet filtering. Assuming a dynamical system generating the returns sequences, we reproduce its dynamics from the data with minimum assumptions. We reconstruct the phase-space dynamics by time-delay embedding of the wavelet denoised returns, in order to apply the RQA. The results indicate that through wavelet pre-filtering we can obtain very quot;cleanquot; sequences and reveal nonstochastic dynamics. Our results also suggest the existence of chaos. We provide both quantitative and qualitative evidence supporting our findings.
