A sizeable minority of people with no particular connection to Eastern religions now believe in reincarnation. The rise in popularity of this belief over the last century and a half is directly traceable to the impact of the nineteenth century's largest and most influential Western esoteric movement, the Theosophical Society. In Recycled Lives, Julie Chajes looks at the rebirth doctrines of the matriarch of Theosophy, the controversial occultist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891). Examining her teachings in detail, Chajes places them in the context of multiple dimensions of nineteenth-century intellectual and cultural life. In particular, she explores Blavatsky's readings (and misreadings) of Spiritualist currents, scientific theories, Platonism, and Hindu and Buddhist thought. These in turn are set in relief against broader nineteenth-century American and European trends. The chapters come together to reveal the contours of a modern perspective on reincarnation that is inseparable from the nineteenth-century discourses within which it emerged, and which has shaped how people in the West tend to view reincarnation today.

Author Megean Weldon, aka The Zero Waste Nerd, gently guides you on an attainable, inspirational, mindful, and completely realistic journey to a sustainable living lifestyle. Find tips, strategies, recipes, and DIY projects for reducing waste in this approachable, beautifully designed and illustrated guide. What is zero waste living? Although the practice has been around for generations out of necessity, it is making a comeback as concerns grow about the fate of our environment. To put it simply: it is attempting to send no waste to landfills. Although you may have read or heard about “zero waste,” “sustainable,” or “green” living, the concept can sometimes seem too complicated, the author’s tone a bit self-righteous, or riddled with advice geared for people with 5 acres of land in the country with dreams of raising livestock and homesteading. This is not that book. Can a “regular” person do this? Absolutely! Zero waste isn’t necessarily about zero, but more about changing or altering the way we see the world around us, how we consume, and how we think about waste. It’s about making better choices when we can, and working to reduce our overall impact by reducing the amount of packaging and single-use plastics we bring into our life. Focusing on the positive, An Almost Zero Waste Life presents simple ways to reduce waste in every aspect of your life: Cleaning: Recipes for natural cleaners and how to ditch paper towels for good. Meal plans: Weekly menus and recipes for zero waste meals that use bulk pantry staples. Shopping: How to shop zero waste at big chain stores and ways to reduce food packaging. Bathroom: Sustainable beauty routine. Recycling: Ingenious ways to repurpose old clothing and how to recycle small metals, like razor blades. Compost: The basics of composting. And much more! An Almost Zero Waste Life will change the way you see the world around you, how you consume, and how you think about waste for a healthier planet and happier you.

Walker (religion and culture, Wilfrid Laurier U.) contends with the "image" of Emily Carr, Canadian artist and writer, while at the same time paralleling how the work of Canadian biographers reflects shifting attitudes toward women, religion, and spirituality. Carr, like Georgia O'Keefe and Frieda Kahlo, is an elusive figure whose artistic quest by its innovative and individual nature set her apart from her time. Walker introduces the key elements responsible for the resurgence of interest in Carr during the last 20 years, opening questions on the very nature of feminist creation and its perception by society. Inspired by internationally acclaimed environmental activist, humanitarian, and adventurer Rob Greenfield, Zero Waste Kids fun and easy illustrated projects and activities that will help your family reduce, reuse, and recycle at home, at school, and in your community. While most kids probably aren’t going to grow all their own food for a year like Rob has, Zero Waste Kids features fun and practical projects for growing some of your own food, with advice and encouragement for why doing so is important. And, instead of wearing all their trash for a week like Rob did, with Zero Waste Kids, they’ll learn how to audit their trash, to really understand how much waste they’re personally contributing to the earth’s landfills. Zero Waste Kids helps children to understand the world they live in and inspire them to start living in a more sustainable way. Of all the environmental problems we face, “trash” is one that is easiest to understand because it is very visual, whereas many other problems are more abstract. Zero-waste isn’t the solution to the world’s problems, but a very good place to start. Zero-Waste projects include: Conduct a household trash audit to discover who throws away what and why. Swap disposable shopping bags and lunch boxes for reusable, zero-waste options. Compost your food scraps and grow your own food. Make natural-dye play dough, leaf prints, and more. Zero Waste Kids is every kid’s go-to guide for making a difference. This book is printed on FSC-certified paper using soy inks. And, leading by example, Rob is donating all of his proceeds from the book to environmental nonprofit organizations. Activities contributed by April Hepokoski, Zion Lights, Heidi Rose, Alyssa Binns Gunderson, and Michelle Cassar.
