Culture survives today by means of a constant recycling, optimistically trying to overcome its own decadence in the 21st century. Recycling Culture(s) addresses from a variety of perspectives this strategy, analyzing not only a wide range of texts but also of cultural practices. As the volume shows, culture thrives on a permanent state of flux, borrowing materials for its own survival wherever they are found and always favouring hybridity. This refers not only to how texts cross genre and medium boundaries but also to how identities and the very idea of culture grow out of recycling what is at hand both synchronically and diachronically. Divided in two sections, ‘Part I: Recycling the Book and the Screen’ and ‘Part II: Recycling Identity, Consumption and History,’ the twenty essays offered here are the work of an international group of scholars dealing with different linguistic and geographical environments. A primary aim of the volume is breaking away with the compartmentalisation of Cultural Studies into non-communicating linguistic domains to offer an eclectic, engaging mixture of approaches. This is the twelfth monographic volume of the series Culture & Power edited by members of the permanent seminar on Cultural Studies ‘Culture & Power,’ which has organised an international yearly conference since 1995. "Recycling Culture(s)/ is the latest in the series of Culture and Power books to come out of Spain. It features essays not only from many of the most distinguished cultural studies scholars on the Iberian Peninsular but many from beyond its borders. What makes this volume so stimulating, relevant and exiting is that the contributors range across an impressive assortment of contexts of (and for) recycling. The book’s thematic base is impressive taking in, as it does, the relevance of recycling history, identity and a multitude of popular texts (written and audio-visual). All contributions are theoretically informed and the authors consider subjects from comic-book heroes, James Bond and /Clockwork Orange/ to African-Carribbean women, Australian national myth and mobile phones. The contributors and editor should be congratulated on producing a theoretically coherent, challenging and important intervention into contemporary cultural studies. Garbage in Popular Culture is the first book to explicitly link media discourse, consumer culture and the cultural politics of garbage in contemporary global society. It makes an original contribution to the areas of consumer culture studies, visual culture, media and communications, and cultural theory through a critical analysis of the ways in which waste and garbage are visually communicated in the public realm. Mehita Iqani examines three key themes evident in the global representation of garbage: questions of agency and activism, cultures of hedonism and luxury, and anxieties about devastation and its affect. Each theme is explored through a number of case studies, including zero-waste recycling campaigns communicated on Instagram, to fine art made with waste, popular entertainment festivals, tropical beach tourism, and films about oil spills and plastic waste in oceans. Iqani argues that we need a new vocabulary to think about what it means to be human in this new age of consumption-produced waste, and reflects on what rubbish allows us to learn about our relationship with the natural world.

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, concerns about the environment and the future of global capitalism have dominated political and social agendas worldwide. The culture of excess underlying these concerns is particularly evident in the issue of trash, which for environmentalists has been a negative category, heavily implicated in the destruction of the natural world. However, in the context of the arts, trash has long been seen as a rich aesthetic resource and, more recently, particularly under the influence of anthropology and archaeology, it has been explored as a form of material culture that articulates modes of identity construction. In the context of such shifting, often ambiguous attitudes to the obsolete and the discarded, this book offers a timely insight into their significance for representations of social and personal identity. The essays in the book build on scholarship in cultural theory, sociology and anthropology that suggests that social and personal experience is embedded in material culture, but they also focus on the significance of trash as an aesthetic resource. An overview of recycling as an activity and a process, following different materials through the waste stream. Is there a point to recycling? Is recycling even good for the environment? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Finn Arne Jørgensen answers (drumroll, please): it depends. From a technical point of view, recycling is a series of processes—collecting, sorting, processing, manufacturing. Recycling also has a cultural component; at its core, recycling is about transformation and value, turning material waste into something useful—plastic bags into patio furniture, plastic bottles into T-shirts. Jørgensen offers an accessible and engaging overview of recycling as an activity and as a process at the intersection of the material and the ideological. Jørgensen follows a series of materials as they move back and forth between producer and consumer, continually transforming in form and value, in a never-ceasing journey toward becoming waste. He considers organic waste and cultural contamination; the history of recyclable writing surfaces from papyrus to newsprint; discarded clothing as it moves from the the Global North to the Global South; the shifting fate of glass bottles; the efficiency of aluminum recycling; the many types of plastic and the difficulties of informed consumer choice; e-waste and technological obsolescence; and industrial waste. Finally, re-asking the question posed by John Tierney in an infamous 1996 New York Times article, “is recycling garbage?” Jørgensen argues that recycling is necessary—as both symbolic action and physical activity that has a tangible effect on the real world.

The contributors first consider garbage in subjective terms, examining "toxic autobiography" by residents of Love Canal, the intersection of public health and women's rights, and enviroblogging.
