In this celebrated biography of her mother and autobiography, Silvia Rodgers gives a warts-and-all account of what her off-centre life was like, most always in the wrong place at the most perilous time, almost always in the most difficult company. Her mother is the Red Saint of the title, a Polish Jewish Communist in the Weimar Republic as the stormclouds gathered. In a political sense she was a Saint: dedicated, monomaniacal, with an unbending sense of right and wrong. That saintliness did not include much in the way of conventional maternal feeling for her children; and her relations with her husband were less than harmonious. Race and politics became a problem as the Nazis rose to power: Silvia Rodgers remembers the book burnings, the marauding Brownshirts, the knock at the door. The narrative gathers pace, and the account of her family's flight from a Berlin turned into a nightmare city is heart-stopping. They arrived in an England less hospitable than it remembers itself as having been. The cultural shock of wartime and post-war Britain is vividly recalled; also, the gathering sorrow of loss, as news arrives of friends and relatives killed in the concentration camps. Silvia Rodgers gradually made her own life, moving out from under the shadow of the Red Saint, marrying the Labour politician Bill Rodgers of the `Gang of Four', and eventually herself becoming a writer. The new Afterword written for this paperback edition speaks of this transition, and of the book as a memorial and an exorcism astonishing in its candour.

This book is the first comparative study of the novels written by five German-speaking women - Anna Gmeyner, Selma Kahn, Hilde Spiel, Martina Wied and Hermynia Zur Mühlen - who had to flee National Socialist Central Europe. Gmeyner, Spiel, Wied and Zur Mühlen found refuge in Britain and thus added - together with male colleagues such as Stefan Zweig and Robert Neumann - an important but rarely investigated new dimension to the British literary landscape. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. The author investigates the five writers' narrativisation of everyday life, used to subvert the dominant discourse, and their portrayal of the intersection between class, racial and gender oppression. She also shows their innovative ways of picturing the gendered tension between the experiences of exile and exile as a modernist metaphor as well as their search for ways to refute the Nationalist Socialist rewriting of history. The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing.

The Hitler Emigrés is the story of those Central Europeans, many of them Jewish, who escaped the shadow of Nazism, found refuge in Britain and made a lasting mark on the nation's intellectual and cultural life. Émigrés helped create the Glyndebourne and Edinburgh Festivals, the magazine Picture Post, films like The Red Shoes, the Royal Festival Hall and the cartoon character 'Supermac'. The founders of the publishing companies Phaidon and Thames & Hudson were émigrés, as were Ernst Gombrich (author of The Story of Art), Nikolaus Pevsner (who documented 'The Buildings of England') and such key intellectual figures as the philosopher Karl Popper, the biochemist Max Perutz and the historians Eric Hobsbawm and Geoffrey Elton. Daniel Snowman considers the irony that many refugees (including three quarters of the future Amadeus Quartet) were interned by the British authorities as 'enemy aliens' - and some of them deported to Canada and Australia. And he writes of the mordant humour of George Mikes, 'Vicky' and Hoffnung, the entrepreneurial skills of Claus Moser and George Weidenfeld - and the sheer magnetism of such forceful personalities as Arthur Koestler and the musician and broadcaster Hans Keller. Many of the Hitler émigrés became natural bridge-builders who helped enrich their new homeland with fresh insights from continental Europe. A number moved on to North America and elsewhere. Thus, Hitler, far from eliminating the cosmopolitan culture he so abhorred, helped spread it throughout the world.
