The modern German-Jewish experience through the rise of Nazism in 1933 was characterized by an explosion of cultural and intellectual creativity. Yet well after that history has ended, the influence of Weimar German-Jewish intellectuals has become ever greater. Hannah Arendt, Gershom Scholem, Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig, and Leo Strauss have become household names and possess a continuing resonance. Beyond the Border seeks to explain this phenomenon and analyze how the German-Jewish legacy has continuingly permeated wider modes of Western thought and sensibility, and why these émigrés occupy an increasingly iconic place in contemporary society. Steven Aschheim traces the odyssey of a fascinating group of German-speaking Zionists--among them Martin Buber and Hans Kohn--who recognized the moral dilemmas of Jewish settlement in pre-Israel Palestine and sought a binationalist solution to the Arab-Israel conflict. He explores how German-Jewish émigré historians like Fritz Stern and George Mosse created a new kind of cultural history written against the background of their exile from Nazi Germany and in implicit tension with postwar German social historians. And finally, he examines the reasons behind the remarkable contemporary canonization of these Weimar intellectuals--from Arendt to Strauss--within Western academic and cultural life. Beyond the Border is about more than the physical act of departure. It also points to the pioneering ways these émigrés questioned normative cognitive boundaries and have continued to play a vital role in addressing the predicaments that engage and perplex us today.

Jean Amérys Roman-Essay Lefeu oder Der Abbruch aus dem Jahr 1974 wurde bei Erscheinen in den Feuilletons äußerst kontrovers diskutiert. Danach geriet er fast in Vergessenheit und fand auch in der Literaturwissenschaft kaum Widerhall. Diese Lücke will diese Dissertation schließen. Sie zeigt, dass Améry mit dem Roman-Essay in verschiedener Hinsicht seiner Zeit voraus war. Zum einen, indem er nicht autobiographisch über Auschwitz schrieb, auch wenn die Literaturkritik dies mehrheitlich ignorierte und im Lefeu einmal mehr einen autobiographischen Text sah. Zum anderen, indem er einen essayistisch-literarischen Text vorlegte und die Gattung des Roman-Essays erweiterte. Des Weiteren, indem er sowohl diskutierte, wie Kunst nach Auschwitz zu sein habe, und sich gleichzeitig fragte, wie der Holocaust durch die Kunst dargestellt werden könnte. Sein Anspruch ging dabei so weit, dass er mit dem Lefeu ein exemplarisches Werk vorlegen wollte, das selbst die Antwort auf all diese Fragen sein sollte. Erstmals geht diese Arbeit daneben ausführlich auf die Figur des Malers ein und stellt biographische und Werk-Zusammenhänge zum Maler Erich Schmid her, der Freund und Weggefährte Jean Amérys war. Die Autorin Ivonn Kappel studierte in Salzburg, Amsterdam und Berlin Germanistik und Kunstgeschichte. Im Anschluss folgte ein Zeitungsvolontariat in Mainz sowie die Anstellung als Presse-Referentin beim Deutschen Sparkassen- und Giroverband in Berlin. Zahlreiche Forschungsaufenthalte im Deutschen Literaturarchiv in Marbach sowie in Wien, u. a. Literaturhaus Wien, Österreichische Exilbibliothek, Österreichische Galerie Belvedere.

Essays analyzing postwar literary, cultural, and historical representations of "good Germans" during the Second World War and the Nazi period. In the aftermath of the Second World War, both the allied occupying powers and the nascent German authorities sought Germans whose record during the war and the Nazi period could serve as a counterpoint to the notion of Germans asevil. That search has never really stopped. In the past few years, we have witnessed a burgeoning of cultural representations of this "other" kind of Third Reich citizen - the "good German" - as opposed to the committed Nazi or genocidal maniac. Such representations have highlighted individuals' choices in favor of dissenting behavior, moral truth, or at the very least civil disobedience. The "good German's" counterhegemonic practice cannot negate or contradict the barbaric reality of Hitler's Germany, but reflects a value system based on humanity and an "other" ideal community. This volume of new essays explores postwar and recent representations of "good Germans" during the Third Reich, analyzing the logic of moral behavior, cultural and moral relativism, and social conformity found in them. Imre Kertész ist 1929 in Budapest geboren und dort aufgewachsen. 1944 wurde er im Rahmen einer Judendeportation verhaftet und über Auschwitz in das KZ Buchenwald verbracht. Nach der Befreiung des Lagers 1945 kehrte er in seine Heimatstadt zurück, wo er seit 1953 als Schriftsteller und Übersetzer tätig war. 2001 verlegte er seinen Lebensmittelpunkt nach Berlin. 2002 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Ziel der Untersuchung ist die Rekonstruktion einer in Kertész’ Werk allegorisch codierten Anthropologie und einer damit implizierten Ästhetik. Die Basis der fraglichen Anthropologie ist der Begriff des Lebens. Das spezifisch menschliche Leben zeichnet sich durch den Prozess der kulturellen Evolution aus, welcher durch verständigungsorientierte Mittel rational zu steuern ist. Die hieraus resultierende Dialektik wird von autonomen Personen konstituiert. Dabei erscheint die generationenübergreifende Reproduktion der Personenrolle und des damit einhergehenden menschlichen Bewusstseins als unbedingte Pflicht im Sinne Kants. Letzterer Vorgang kann als ästhetische Erfahrung beschrieben werden, bei der die menschliche Ontogenese jeweils in Orientierung an paradigmatischen Darstellungen der Personalität respektive der Personalisierung erfolgt.
